@kpaige British Overseas Territories are technically not part of the UK, just like the Crown Colonies.
From Wikipedia: "The British Overseas Territories (BOTs) or United Kingdom Overseas Territories (UKOTs) are fourteen territories all with a constitutional link with – but not forming part of – the United Kingdom."
On the other hand, the image you used is for the European Union, and Cyprus is part of the EU. Maybe add a hint saying Cyprus is considered part of Asia for this quiz.
It should be considered European. It historically, culturally and diplomatically has much stronger ties with the rest of Europe than it does with the middle east.
yeah, trinidad should definitely be considered part of south america due to how geographically close it is, especially if cyprus is considered part of asia, completely ignoring culture and tradition. iceland should also be considered part of north america... malta considered part of africa... palau part of asia... and so on. its dumb that cyprus is the only one that people complain about when there is so many others, that they dont talk about at all. cyprus is geographically part of asia, but europe is defined as a continent by its distinct culture, and cyprus has that distinct european culture
No, not his opinion. The Vatican itself identifies as an absolute monarchy. So he is right. Your opinion doesn't count. The Vatican's official definition of its government does.
an absolute monarchy is where the parents pass it down to their children. thats not at all what they do. Its just a dictatorship. not that its bad or anything, but it is.
I'd personally say it's more accurate to call it a "theocracy" or maybe a "theocratic monarchy" but I understand where "absolute monarchy" is coming from since the Pope basically has the powers of a monarch within the Vatican.
qcumber is thinking of a hereditary monarchy and a monarchy may and usually is both but not in this case. an absolute monarcy refers to the power held not the means by which it was gained, specifically where that authority is not restricted by any written laws, legislature, or customs (unlike a constitional monarchy).
i can define/identify myself as the monarch but that doesn’t make me one. especially considering the qualifier ‘absolute’, there should be no question the vatican is a monarchy if you’re going to put it in a question, and it is clearly debateable
An absolute monarchy is simply a monarchy where the monarch holds absolute power, ie not restricted by any other person's or body's power, as in a constitutional monarchy, for example. Vatican City is definitely an absolute monarchy because the Pope's power is unrestricted. No other country in Europe has a monarch with such power, so Vatican City is definitely the only absolute monarchy in Europe. The question is fine.
Please do not politicize this quiz with an image of the EU symbol. The European Union is not representative of all of Europe, which this quiz draws answers from (Russia, Switzerland, Iceland, Ukraine, et cetera).
European flag was designed originally for the Council of Europe and has been used by that organization for 30 years longer than EC/EU. CoE includes all European countries except Belarus, Kazakhstan, Vatican and Kosovo.
Besides, what about e.g. best basketball players quiz which only has an image of Michael Jordan?
A small part of Kazakhstan is considered European territory generally as the arbitrary border of Europe has been drawn through it. Generally speaking it's considered an Asian country though.
I'm pretty sure the capital of Denmark starts with K in Danish :). Guess we're referring to the English name of the capital, which of course is not the name of the capital at all...
Not a good idea to show the EU flag to illustrate this quizz. I kept searching for a EU state all the time the quizz went. Europe as a continent and EU as a political body are two very different entities.
"Doubly landlocked" means "all its neighbours are landlocked". Both France and Spain are not landlocked. The only doubly landlocked countries are Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan.
Bit deceptive to have the EU flag as the pic? But hey the 100m ppl clue soon makes you realise its all of Europe (and it helps to read the instructions! Doh!). Good quiz, quite tough. Viva the EU, from an embarrassed Brit!!
WHy is Cyprus not in the quiz!Cyprus might be closer geographically to Africa and Asia but is definitely European! + it's in the European Union. Also Kosovo is not recognised by all as an independent country
There are no speed limits on certain roads on the Isle of Man, UK. Not like Germany's autobahns - these are rural roads, where the law basically says don't drive like an idiot. But I think that technically, the UK has roads with no speed limit too!
Well now it's just some buildings. They represent less than 1% of European land and less than 1% of Europe's population. A bit misleading - thought it was only about the country that they're in.
Not only on Jetpunk. Look at a map. Continents are defined by physical geography - continental plates, oceans, mountain ranges, etc, not what currency they use. Is every country that uses US Dollars in North America now? Cyprus is clearly in Asia, and it would be in Africa before it was in Europe!
Wrong. Serbian government, military, police, border police, etc have no jurisdiction in Kosovo. Pretending that Kosovo is Serbian is purely nationalistic brain-washing.
I live in Europe and it had never crossed my mind that Cyprus could be considered part of Asia. Dudes, it's in the European Union, how can it possibly be considered other than a European country?
From Wikipedia: "The British Overseas Territories (BOTs) or United Kingdom Overseas Territories (UKOTs) are fourteen territories all with a constitutional link with – but not forming part of – the United Kingdom."
1. europa and asia are one continent, as theres no geographical border
2.some carribean nations are in south america
3. palau is asia
4. timor leste is oceania
and more.
I'm Irish...
Besides, what about e.g. best basketball players quiz which only has an image of Michael Jordan?
Problem with Andorra, Ukraine and Norway. Tricky.
It doesn’t matter though, because it said not counting British territories.
But I think we all understand that it shouldn't be included in this quiz anyway...
To illustrate my point: jetpunk considers Trinidad and Tobago to be part of North America.
But probably the reason is i live in Europe
