I created a database, listing all urban areas with at least 100,000 inhabitants (roughly 6,200 cities) in order to avoid obscure suburbs. However, international urban areas (e.g. Juárez - El Paso) have NOT been grouped together.
The main sources are the OECD's Regions and Cities Atlas as well as CityPopulation.de, usually choosing whoever lists the higher population figure. Untrustworthy figures (e.g. OECD listing Comilla, Bangladesh as having 8 million inhabitants) have been discarded. For CityPopulation, only country-specific sites have been used (and thus not the agglomerations page).
Note China: As China uses a complicated city-county system, only OECD data has been taken into account.
For Libya and the D.R. Congo, Wikipedia has been used.
Enjoy!
It's strange not to find Atlanta on this list since its metro area (5.7 million) is the ninth largest in the US, but the population of the city proper is 472k.
