In 2014 we did a similar quiz that got featured. It attracted so much debate in the comments section we got sick of it, and it remains the only featured quiz that we've asked Dan to de-feature!
It seems many countries that use 'The' before their name aren't being included in this quiz, so if that's the case could you possibly add something into the description to specify that?
It's splitting hairs; for an English quiz, I think El Salvador is acceptable. As everything here on jetpunk, for better or worse the final arbitrator is wikipedia, which the entry in English for El Salvador is "el salvador"
The United States. The United Kingdom. I know those already have two words, but the point is that "The" works for a lot of countries, and it would be pointless to include every country for which it works.
Cool quiz, thanks. Certainly always gonna have dissenters worrying about "the" and "el" etc, so don't worry about drawing the line somewhere. Isn't "Ivory Coast" the standard in COTW by the way?
Interesting business about saying or writing "the" before Gambia and Bahamas. I haven't heard any Englishmen talking about Gambia, but all of the Scandinavians and Central Europeans I've talked to would call it "Gambia," with no article. Meanwhile, I've never heard anyone say "Bahamas" without putting the article in front. Saying something like "Let's take a vacation to Bahamas" sounds like something a Russian would say. However, during Andropov's brief tenure, there was said to be a Soviet propaganda standard in regard to the article in "the Ukraine." Even though their own language lacks articles, the Soviets wanted the word "the" in front of "Ukraine," to relegate that place to a status similar to that of "the Gambia, the Sudan, the Transvaal, and the Transjordan," back in the days of the British Empire.
I assume that to be an urban legend about Soviet demands. It doesn't even make sense, it was just one of the republics. English language is just inconsistent like many others, and Ukrainians read too much into it.
"el" means "the", and all the [English-named] "the" countries have the "the" removed for the purposes of this quiz, so it looks like Spanish "the"s are taking precedence over English "the"s. The French simply bin the "el"...
I think the discomfort here is that 'Micronesia' technically refers to the sub-region of Oceania, which includes several sovereign nations, one of which is the Federated States of Micronesia. Of course, QM has always accepted Micronesia as a type-in for the country, along with FSM.
so funny that JetPunk users are so hip to using Czechia that some forget that it's still colloquially known as the Czech Republic in most of the English speaking world
I would argue that is countries starting with "The" such as The Gambia (it's official name) aren't included then El Salvador shouldn't be included either since El means The in spanish.
I'd also argue since the official name is now Czechia, Czech Republic shouldn't be included.
I don't understand why El Salvador is allowed and The Bahamas and The Gambia are not. All three start with "the" in the common short name including in Wikipedia which is used for many JetPunk quizzes. You really should either remove El Salvador or include The Bahamas and The Gambia (although type ins for bahamas and gambia should still apply)
the bahamas
the gambia
the chad republic
the ukraine
the netherlands
among some others
1. The Gambia.
2. The Bahamas.
These two countries should be the only ones who ask to be referred to with the inclusion of ‘The’ in name.
This is not the case with many other countries like the netherlands, the ukraine, the sudan etc… only applies this way to The Gambia and The Bahamas.
The only two countries that officially include "The" are The Gambia and The Bahamas.
We are counting the short names
Federated states of Micronesia
United States of America
Then perhaps America shouldn’t count either.
Or perhaps the United Mexican States should be included too because that is the official name of Mexico.
The caveat clearly states “Based on the names used in the JetPunk Countries of the World quiz”
Alright then.
I'd also argue since the official name is now Czechia, Czech Republic shouldn't be included.
