Don't agree with the "Continental" defintion; I looked up Britannica and they don't mention anything like this.

As someone living on the Scottish mainland, you would never describe someone living in Ayr as "continental" compared to those living on the Hebrides.

What a conundrum! I think the problem is Wiktionary’s use of the word “mainland” in their definition. According to their primary definition, Ayr would not be considered a mainland town because it is itself situated on an island. Their secondary definition allows for any location on Great Britain to be called “mainland” because G.B. is the principal island of a group. So, to avoid this confusion …

I have broken my self-imposed rule and have written my own definition … a sort of composite of several definitions I have consulted.
