Lyric
Oh,
the
weather
outside
is
frightful,
but
the
fire
is
so
delightful!
Lyric
And
since
we’ve
no
place
to
go,
let
it
snow,
let
it
snow,
let
it
snow!
Lyric
It
doesn’t
show
signs
of
stopping,
and
I’ve
brought
some
corn
for
popping.
Lyric
The
lights
are
turned
way
down
low …
Let
it
snow!
Let
it
snow!
Let
it
snow!
Lyric
When
we
finally
kiss
goodnight,
how
I’ll
hate
going
out
in
the
storm!
Lyric
But
if
you’ll
really
hold
me
tight,
all
the
way
home
I’ll
be
warm!
Lyric
The
fire
is
slowly
dying,
and
my
dear,
we’re
still
goodbying.
Lyric
As
long
as
you
love
me
so,
let
it
snow,
let
it
snow,
let
it
snow!

Hmmmmm …
I could, and I’ll think about it … but I won’t make any promises. Here’s the way I’m thinking about it right at this moment.
Song lyrics, as written, are often ungrammatical. And I have no problem with that because that is an artistic choice.
Because I don’t own sheet music for these songs (and don’t have access to the original manuscripts), I checked between three and five sources for each song to ensure I could come as close as possible to the lyricist’s artistic choices. In some cases, their choice did not match what I thought I had been hearing for decades (and what I’ve been singing in the shower for many years). They also don’t match the artistic choices made by some artists who have recorded these songs.
So, are these quizzes about knowing the author’s lyrics, knowing the way somebody altered the lyrics when they recorded the song, or knowing what one individual assumed the lyrics were without ever having seen them written down?
My gut reaction is that I need to be true to the author’s artistic choices. But as promised, I’ll give it some more thought.
