Since the VH1 list is so terrible and has received many complaints on this site and elsewhere for its poor selections, I have made my own list of the 50 greatest women in music as far as my humble opinion goes, hopefully it contains a much better selection. See if you can guess them all.
Thanks for taking a stab at this - the VH1 list is terrible. But let the arguments begin! I'm going to start by asking about Ella Fitzgerald, Chrissie Hynde, Christine McVie, Bonnie Raitt and Gladys Knight. Also, check your spelling on Marianne Faithful.
Cheers for that, fixed the spelling. There are two "L"s but it's an "E" rather than an "A" - so "Marianne Faithfull". I did debate including Ella Fitzgerald. I was going to do a top 100 but I got to about 85 and then really wasn't sure who else to add to it after that (which is shameful I know).
I tried Alanis Morissette and when I released she wasn't there I gave up. same with Barbra Streisand, Gloria Estefan, Toni Braxton, Cher and Celine Dion.
Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Collins, Mahalia Jackson, Bessie Smith, Etta James, Judy Garland, Celine Dion, Dionne Warwick, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, kd Lang, Norah Jones, Anoushka Shankar, Aimee Mann, Bonnie Raitt, Rosetta Tharp, Aimee Mann, Maria Schneider, Carly Simon, Karen Carpenter, Kaki King, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Barbra Streisand, Skeeter Davis, Sharon Isbin, Rosanne Cash, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Chrissie Hynde, Beth Hart, Diana Krall, Cher, Michelle Phillips, Mama Cass, Gladys Knight, Tammy Wynette, Sade, Linda Thompson, Joan Armatrading, Rickie Lee Jones, Laura Nyro, Rhiannon Giddens, Alison Krauss, Sharon Jones, Nadia Boulanger, Adele, Sia, Allison Moorer, Shelby Lynn, Gillian Welch, Alicia Keys. Most of these should probably be ahead of Many on your list (Grace Jones, Jane Birkin, Vashti Bunyan). I have to admit I'm not familiar with Lhasa De Sela, Beth Gibbons or Elizabeth Fraser, but I'm guessing a few of mine are unknown to you too.
Having to enter the whole name (when almost all name-based quizzes accept last names) meant that I thought you were only including REALLY obscure people. Please update to accept last names!
Anyone who leaves the great Lady of Song-Ella Fitzgerald off their list tells me that there is a lack of knowledge when it comes to music. The same can be said about Dinah Washington, Barbra Streisand, Patsy Cline, Karen Carpenter, and Sarah Vaughan.
The VH1 list is absolute garbage but you could at least consider Chrissie Hynde. She's one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Same with Loretta Lynn
i think Miriam Makeba, Ella Fitzgerald, Maria Callas, Judy Garland, Eartha Kitt, Sinead O'Connor, Etta James, Sade should be included over some more irrelevant names on your list
I just want to make sure I understand this correctly; because you dislike the VH1 list so much, you made an entire quiz based on something that's entirely your opinion, making every single answer pure guesswork. Is that right?
Nice quiz! Thank you. I don't understand why people complain or gave up. The quiz writes "as far as my humble opinion goes". The suggestions above just shows there could easily be a list of 100 women. I just feel inspried to make a quiz myselves!
