Whenever I think of the difference between the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it always reminds me of Monty Python and the Holy Grail when Galahad enters the castle Anthrax. He identifies himself as "Sir Galahad, the Chaste". To which Zoot replies, "Mine is Zoot. Just....Zoot."
@NotmiandKiKi, you are correct. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is NOT a democracy or republic (which is kind of ironic), and The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, otherwise known as North Korea, is not a democracy either.
So, I do not know why these countries named themselves this. Probably not to piss off the US.
I know someone has mentioned this on this site before, but can't we just have an "East Congo" and a "West Congo"? It'd make life so much easier. Or, we could go back to calling the DRC "Zaire." Say what you want about Mobutu, but at least he cleared up the whole Congo naming issue!
Yeah, but I think the point Eva was making was that you need the descriptor to distinguish between the two. You don't need to say "I'm going to the Argentine Republic" because there is only one Argentina. But if you say "I'm going to Congo," there is no way to know which you mean.
Because both Congos are some of the only countries (along with F.S. of Micronesia and that might be it) in the world that don't have an official short name. So there is no other version of their name to use.
We do that for the same reason we list "Taiwan" instead of "People's Republic of China"
Another reason is because the word "Congo" is said in two different country names, "Democratic Republic of the Congo" and "Republic of the Congo" so if Congo were listed as one country it would be false and you couldn't have two answers for one word.
There are two. The Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Usually for a countrywith a name like that we would shorten it, but because there is two we use the full names.
There are two Congolese countries, the Republic of the Congo (18 letters) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (27 letters). Both Congos are WAYYY off the list. SO STOP SAYING THEM!
*all around me are familiar faces*
What can I say? I'm deep.
