Good quiz, but should give correct for German Empire (has to be Germany)...... and Greek Civilization (has to be Greece) ... otherwise good.

Accepting black powder for gun powder would make me very happy.

I would, but Black Powder does not begin with "G".

Grey/gray powder then?

Well, I guess you're probably still sad then.

"Material" feels like a misleading clue, material you make something out of and I can't imagine what you'd make out of gunpowder, you just use it as is, don't you? Substance would be a better word.

I think it should be called "kablooey sand"

So many possible answers for the ground grey granular grit gravel that has no obvious clue to gunpowder to one who does not recognize the item shown with it; how about an actual shotgun shell? or fireworks display?

Yeah, my best guess was gravel. I always assumed that gunpowder was a... you know... powder. It never occurred to me that granular stuff with grains large enough to grit your driveway would be gun"powder".

Weird. I got it right away.

I, too, said gravel at first. Took a while and a few guesses before gunpowder. Only then did I realise that it's a bullet in the photo. I live in a country with an appropriate level of gun laws, so the bullet wasn't so obvious to me...

It's not a bullet, but a measure...and my first answer was graphite

Modern gunpowder contains graphite so you weren't far off the mark.

Looks like gunpowder to me. And between gunpowder and gravel which substance had a greater impact on history?

Plus, which one has anything to do with a shell casing?

Either way it takes 5 seconds to type them both in.

It's not a shell casing, samiamco, it's a powder measure - you can see the handle and markings.

That's not a gargoyle. A gargoyle has a drainage function. That is a "grotesque", which is a statue(ette).

I was lied to by Disney on multiple occasions, then.

Jun 29, 2018
You were indeed. Don't you know Disney tends to simplify everything? There is a confusion between the medieval gargoyles depicted in Victor Hugo's novel and the famous chimeras added by Viollet-le-Duc circa 1850.

A gargoyle is a type of grotesque, and I know grotesque is accepted for this exact picture in another quiz, soooooo… whaddaya say, O Lord of Quizdom?

Gargoyle is apparently very often used for such statues, but it's still incorrect.

Man a gargoyle comes in many shapes and sizes. There isn’t one set design for a gargoyle, similar to many things.

A gargoyle is only properly referred to as such when it acts as a water spout. The object pictured is a grotesque.

In fact, it is a chimera. Maybe a lesser-known but more appropriate picture could be chosen... There are a bunch here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gargoyle
