Epic test. Got 429. Sebastian and Sandusky are misspelled though and "Barnstable Town" is just a formality when Barnstable changed to a city from a town, the Census Bureau drops the "Town" in there but absolutely no one does anywhere near Barnstable.

Also Mankato, MN (53,000), St. Cloud, MN (110,000), Sioux City, IA (116,000), Rock Hill, SC (105,000) and Alton, IL (83,000) are missing. I think there might have been a couple others but I've forgotten now.

Many of these are compound names with the Census Bureau (Palm Coast--Daytona Beach--Port Orange, FL or Leominster--Fitchurg, MA) where the more well known, more compact business center is technically outpopulated by a sprawling suburb with technically large municipal limits and the Census folks don't seem to care. Some, like Virginia Beach (Norfolk) include an older much more established city that is the true heart of the urbanized area, but they just leave it out of the name altogether.

I am a little confused by the original source. It doesn't seem to be using any of the definitions provided by the U.S. Census Bureau (MSA, CSA, or city proper). Which unfortunately means it's not consistent with our other featured quizzes. But, since it got the most nominations, we are going to feature it as-is.
+6
Level 72
Feb 17, 2020
Yeah this quiz is a bit different from other features as the 2010 populations listed by citypopulation are urban areas and not metropolitan or city proper. Citypopulation says it's source is the US Census Bureau and I am inclined to believe them.
+10
Level 72
Feb 17, 2020
I decided to go with urban areas for that I believe it to be more representative of the "biggest" US cities as metro areas could encompass areas hundreds of miles away and proper doesn't really show the true scale of a city.
+7
Level 88
May 30, 2020
It's the U.S. Census Bureau's definition of urban areas, i.e., actual areas of solid development whereas their metropolitan areas are widely varying areas of excess rural and unrelated urban development. In more crowded or smaller adjacent areas, the outlying "metropolitan" area of one will sponge another metro area's direct urban population. They have no geographic or urban development standards that make numerical comparison relevant at all, just gerrymandered county lines that could contain 10s of 1,000s of square miles or 100.

Granted, the urban areas do have odd anomalies such as considering Riverside a separate urban area of millions of people abutting empty inland desert and Los Angeles; San Francisco and San Jose being separate urban areas, etc.

Here are the government lists:

I mean it's impossible to figure out on the map what you are missing as the cities aren't marked until you guess them. Also the dots are so big that cities overlap a lot, so it becomes harder to see if you miss something. I suppose the state abbreviation is a clue, but I stupidly thought MO was Montana and ended up missing St. Louis even!

The methodology of what gets to be a separate city / urban area and not seems...odd. McKinney, TX is widely considered an exurb of Dallas, and it's certainly less distinct from Dallas than Fort Worth is. If McKinney and Denton are separate urban areas, Fort Worth-Arlington certainly should be as well. Warner Robins, GA is another weird choice, as it's pretty much seen as "Macon - Warner Robins" in GA.

Interesting article! I think it's interesting how metro areas vary depending on who you asked. I just kind of assumed that The Woodlands would be a part of the Houston metro rather than its own thing, for instance. I think a big part of the underguessed metros is that they are overshadowed by larger cities that are more likely to come to mind first when thinking of a certain region.

As an aside, I feel like LA's metro area can get quite weird because the counties in Southern California are so big. The fact that Greater LA has parts of it like Needles that are over a 4 hour drive away from LA, but less than 2 hours away from Las Vegas, is very bizarre. Of course, that's a very small part of the region, but it still highlights a big flaw in how the US defines metro areas at the county level imo.

Perhaps the solution is making the counties smaller, because the same issue doesn't seem so pronounced in eastern cities
