Before I get the usual complaints, the population figures and the cities chosen are decided by the U.S. Census Bureau, not me.

No way is Lake Jackson anywhere close to 75K. Being generous it's not even 30K. Even if you take the 3 closest cities (Freeport, Angelton and Brazoria) into account there are no more than 60K. That is circle 20 miles in diameter with a heck of a lot more swamp and marsh than developed land. I'm all for a good effort but go find another city to add to the list.

Aberdeen--Bel Air and Simi Valley are missing.

Also, Texas City is almost completely turned green when Houston is entered. It makes it appear as if Texas City is already answered.

I know we have pointed out corrections, but this is a great quiz, much more accurate statistics than others and the fill-in map is great work. It really helps in remembering what's already been answered. We appreciate the time quiz makers put in even if comment sections look like the complaint line after Christmas.

I finally did it! I was able to name all 500, it took a lot of effort. It was hard trying to figure out what was considered to be a city in this quiz since so many big cities were lumped into metro areas. A tip to people trying to beat this quiz; start close to where you live as these places will be fresh in your memory and then spread out. if you can try working in an order state by state. For me, I did Alaska and the Hawaii and then worked west to east. great job on this quiz though, creator. It was a huge challenge. I also definitely learned something.

Same here, probably the biggest test I've completed in the allotted time. I left it open untimed several times and would go back to it once my head stopped trying so hard. Finally went for it under the gun and couldn't remember San Luis Obispo in that little cluster of beach 'burbs up the coast. Squeaked it in at a little over a minute left.

I don't know if this has been mentioned already, and I know you are just quoting your source but the population numbers for Providence, RI are just not accurate. Your source essentially is counting the entire state of Rhode Island as one metro area.
+3
Level 89

It's counting the continuous urban area around it in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. "Metro areas" in the U.S. cover wildly random sized land areas far bigger than the state of Rhode Island even for small urban areas. They are a useless statistic in comparing city size.

Interesting article! I think it's interesting how metro areas vary depending on who you asked. I just kind of assumed that The Woodlands would be a part of the Houston metro rather than its own thing, for instance. I think a big part of the underguessed metros is that they are overshadowed by larger cities that are more likely to come to mind first when thinking of a certain region.

As an aside, I feel like LA's metro area can get quite weird because the counties in Southern California are so big. The fact that Greater LA has parts of it like Needles that are over a 4 hour drive away from LA, but less than 2 hours away from Las Vegas, is very bizarre. Of course, that's a very small part of the region, but it still highlights a big flaw in how the US defines metro areas at the county level imo.

Perhaps the solution is making the counties smaller, because the same issue doesn't seem so pronounced in eastern cities

As much as I love that my "small town" of Burlington VT is on the map, it doesn't have a population of 100,000. Burlington has a population of about 40,000. That's the big city here, it doesn't make a national list like this. If you're going by urban sprawl, saw on the map there is a South Burlington, and combined that would be incorrect. There is no such thing as an urban sprawl here in Vermont. They are two distinct towns. Even with college students, it tops out at 50,000, less than half as what it is shown. Yourm source is wrong
