Last time I checked French Guiana was on the continent of South America so it should be included on here under something. France, French territory, whatever......
Following this, in 1979, Greenland was granted home rule by the Danish government. Denmark remained in control of foreign relations and defense in Greenland after this. In 2008 Greenland's citizens approved the Greenlandic self-government referendum with a 75% vote in favor of a higher degree of independence.
France is a country which extends to more than one continent, similar to Russia and Turkey. French Guiana changed from a colony to a French department in 1946, and French departments are similar to US states - it's like Hawaii rather than Puerto Rico. As a French department it is part of the EU and Eurozone, it flies the French flag, and its currency is the euro, so politically it is tied to Europe. On this site Turkey is considered an Asian country, and Russia is considered a European country so I have no problem excluding France from the quiz, but I see many claiming that FG is an overseas territory and that is incorrect. France also has overseas department in North America and Africa, so the country of France extends to four continents but it is still considered part of Europe.
French here. By law, except for New Caledonia that has a kind of hybrid status, all French overseas dependencies are integral part of France, no matter if they're departments or territories (the only difference is the importancy of the autonomy).
I really cannot understand why you give so much time. I am as low typist and often drunk when quizzing but completed with over 3 minutes to spare. The time limit makes it uncompetitive. Far too generous.
If this quiz was given 20 seconds , just think about the disappointment for all the speed typists who would be unable to boast how quick they had finished and how really clever and smart they are to be so quick. And people with names opposite to their nature would not be able to go from quiz to quiz whingeing about how much time has been allotted.
It's ridiculous to exclude French Guiana because it is part of France! It is PHYSICALLY located on the South American continent; therefore, regardless of political or national affiliations it is part of South America.
French Guiana is in this case, counted as the largest overseas territory of France in the world, and good job to LBA for not counting the Falklands or French Guiana as part of this map. The Falkland islands are also an overseas territory, but it is part of the United Kingdom. Good job LBA nice quiz.
France should definitly be on this quizz. French Guyana is NOT an oversee territory, it's an oversee region. There is only small differencies to adapt the law to local precises circonstances but thats all. A baby born in a Cayenne is as french as one born in Paris.
Denying that France is part of Europe and South America is like saying that the european part of Turkey is not turkey, or that Alaska is not really part of the USA.
It's just wrong.
France extends on 2 continents, that's it. No need to cut a needle in 3...
Falkland Islands and French Guiana should be on here. They are part of South America despite both being Quasi-independent overseas territories of European nations.
Once again, the Falklands are an overseas territory, but French Guiana is an overseas department, not the same thing. French departments are similar to US states, not territories, and besides Europe, French departments are also located in North America, South America, and Africa. France is one of the countries located on the South American continent, but as with other countries on this site which are located on more than one continent (such as Turkey and Russia) only one continent is chosen, and in this case FG is politically included with Europe even though it is geographically located in South America. It is similar to the US state of Hawaii which is politically considered part of North America even though geographically it is located far away - some say in the continent of Oceania.
Great clarification by ander there. Although the simple reply to your question is that this quiz consider only sovereign states. As you said, the falklands are a territory, and FG are politically part of Europe, as ander explained. So neither of these qualify to be "Countries of South America"
Classic quiz, QM, but may I ask why is it featured today? I mean, everybody on the site already took it at some point, and I don't see what has changed to force the reset. New map, maybe?
WAAAAY too much time. You either know these or you don't. It shouldn't take very long to think about the one's you might be missing. There's only 12 answers, after all.
Trinidad should definitely be considered part of South America, it's so obviously a continuation of the landmass. Same for the Netherlands too with the ABC's.
And put France in for goodness sake! It's embarrassing that the featured South American Map Quiz of this site misunderstands the status of French Guiana.
If someone wonders wether 'X' part is South or is North, well, whoever that is I'm gonna explain it to you. This quiz, as many others, follow the law of JetPunk's borders. That means that Panama is not split into two, Trinidad is North American and no country having a territory or constituent country in some part of the continent is included in the quiz (France and the UK).
Missing France. I think it's clear that all those years ago people were rightly complaining that French Guiana shouldn't be an answer, it should just be France. It's not an overseas territory like the Falklands, it's just a part of France.
There are two SVG maps of South America, one with the other country's territories - like French Guiana and the Falkland Islands - and one without. This one is the one without the territories.
To take some time off. Of course not. The time stays the same. Just type the other letter and you just spelled to correct way of
Colombia.
(I apologise if the quiz used to have a time limit of, er, 4 minutes and 4 seconds.)
also finished with 3:30 to spare...
French Guiana should be included
