Pretty much every baseball player post WWII is/was on some sort of PED.
Greenies (Dexedrine) were handed out like candy back in the day and weren't tested for until 2006.
Today, quite a few players get an ADHD diagnosis so they can take Adderall without getting in trouble. As of 2013, it was 10% of the league but it's probably much more now.
Chewing tobacco and caffeine pills serve similar purposes.
Home runs per game are higher today than in the "steroid era". Pitchers are throwing faster than ever. It's likely that steroids remain a large part of the game today.
Which sucks for the guys that got caught. There are lots of players in the Hall of Fame who used everything under the sun, and who weren't half the player Barry Bonds or ARod was.
A couple things...It's odd that this was updated just a week before the end of the season, but whatever. Also, while Acuna's steals this season are amazing, it's worth noting he has had a full three inches less distance to cover which does matter when you figure how close the plays already were. MLB-wide there have been nearly 1,000 more stolen bases this year than in 2022. I was against all the new changes initially, but actually like the pitch clock now. Base size changes, not so much...
That's true, but its worth noting that 3 of the other four 40-40 members had 40 or 41 SBs. Acuna has 68 (and counting). That's 70% more, probably more than enough to make up for any marginal advantage that a runner has in 2023.
I agree, and it's also worth nothing that Acuna came close to joining the 40-40 club back in 2019 (41 HR and 37 SB) before the new rules were implemented. Then again, the other new rule that likely is helping players with more steals this year is the limitations on pickoffs. Regardless, it's been a pretty incredible season from Acuna, at least in this Braves fan's opinion :)
You're proving my point, Linus. Acuna stole 37 bases five years ago when he was younger under the old rules, and 73 last year with the new base size and pickoff rule. This has not only made it easier to steal bases, it has emboldened players to try to steal more. The success rate was over 80% this year league wide - the highest in MLB history. Keep the pitch clock, dump the bigger bases and automatic runner on 2nd in extras. I'm ambivalent on the pickoff rule...
I don't know...it wasn't just the 3 inch issue...it was also the limited pick off issue, which is not exactly a marginal advantage. Once a pitcher attempted a pick off twice, they HAD to go to home plate or incur a penalty. So it allowed runners to get a huge jump after 2 attempted pick offs. There's a video of him opening day getting really excited after the 2nd pick off attempt knowing that he had an easy stolen base. This whole year should have a massive asterisk next to it.
If Ohtani (not exactly a speedster) can steal 40 bases and only get caught 4 times, I feel like the new rules are making base stealing too easy. Not sure how to fix it...
Nah. I think it's about work and craft that comes into how people steal bases. You might be slow, but that doesn't mean you're a threat on the bases like Freddie Freeman or Paul Goldschmidt. Heck, even Albert Pujols stole more than 15 bases in one year despite being one of the slowest players of all time.
I loved watching Pujols steal bases. Despite being VERY slow, he was an incredibly smart and shrewd baserunner. I think i even heard that Pujols holds some MLB record of most games played between times getting caught stealing or something like that.
