It was confirmed by The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary. The trench was dug out by the Empire to extract the kyber crystals; then the First Order used the trench to build Starkiller base. The superweapon uses the inner core of the planet, made out of kyber crystal, which explains its enormous power once compared to the Death Stars.
