I thought they recently changed the thimble to a cat? You should make a Canada version too. We have a hamburger, and air plane, a cellphone, a roller skate, and more.
Same, wait no, the other way around I think. I think we had a Monopoly piece we used for Cluedo. Since for cluedo it is necessary to have all the pieces while for monopoly you usually dont play with 10 people, so in our case we only needed 3 pieces to use to go around the board. (And the type doesnt matter)
Somewhere along the way, I started using the iron...and then just always used the iron. Everyone always fought over the dog or the race car, but I never had any competition for the iron. Made it easy to always get the one I wanted, I guess.
They would only have a bag of money and a cat if they bought the game relatively recent. Usually games like that stay in the family so it is most likely people have versions older than 2000.
As a kid my parents had an old set that had colored wooden tokens, simiilar to chess pieces. I always thought that those were the right ones, until I played at a friends house and they had these metal things!!
Doing a search now, I find out the wooden ones date pre 1937! (or perhaps a short period during WW2).
PS.
It had plastic houses/hotels, but the 8 colored wooden tokens, so not sure what era it's from.
My family wasn't big enough for me to play Monopoly on a regular basis, but I want the thimble back. When I played, it was either with that or the hat.

RJ: [getting out Monopoly game pieces] Now, this is us.
Hammy: Can I be the car?
Bucky: I wanna be the car!
Spike: I'm the car! You be the shoe.
Bucky: Shoe is lame.
Lou: Why don't you be that snazzy lookin' iron there?
