Find The Mystery Country Using Hints - Randomized!
To start, name any country. Use the colour clues in the map legend to find the mystery country. When you guess the mystery country, the quiz is over - you win!
To address a few questions repeatedly asked in the comments:
- A landmass is any contiguous piece of land, such as Afro-Eurasia, Borneo, Hispaniola, etc.
- Names as in the Countries of the World quiz are used, so the last letter of the USA is S (United States)
- French Guiana is an overseas department or France, not an overseas territory. Therefore France is on both the landmass of the Americas as well as Afro-Eurasia, while it's continent is still Europe
Originally there was a little bit more explanation but that seems to have been removed once this was featured. The quiz works as follows:
- Type any country. The country will show up in one of 12 colours. Say we type China.
- Use the legend on the bottom left of the svg to see what the colour means. For example, China shows up in yellow, meaning the mystery country is on the landmass of Afro-Eurasia, but not in Asia, doesn't start with C, and doesn't end with A.
- Using that info, we type the next country. Let's say we pick the DR Congo, which shows up in black. This means the mystery country is in Africa, doesn't end with O, but starts with D
- We then pick Djibouti, with which the quiz ends as it was the mystery country :)
Borderless countries can be answers, since the First Letter, Last Letter and Continent hints should be enough to be able to find the mystery country. But they are indeed a bit more challenging since less countries will be coloured!
That used to be in the explanation but was removed when it was featured: a landmass is any contiguous piece of land, such as Borneo, Afro-Eurasia, Hispaniola, and so on
Since all 12 combinations will happen at some point I had to be clearer in which colour meant what. Originally I followed your colour scheme but you couldn t see the difference between blue, black and the average of the 2 :). So I went for this instead with slightly different colours
Wow! Just yesterday I saw ThatOneGuy's quiz and commented that I'd love to see more of these quizzes. Looks like I've had my wish granted :) Nominated!
It shows up in green but green is also used on the legend, so other countries appear in green as well. Perhaps use a unique colour for the unguessed mystery country? Like hot pink?
If you don't get the answer, then how do you know which country it was?
Also it seems inconsistent. For example, I guessed Sudan and it gave me a dark green color meaning that it has "S" as the first litter, "N" as the last letter and was in the same land mass. Yet Sweden, which meets all three of those same criteria, was colored lime green meaning only the first letter matched the answer. ?
Thanks a lot! Because of the 10,000 answer limit I can only have 51 possible mystery countries at a time. I change the possibilities up every once in a while, but it could very well be that indeed the only African option starting with M currently is Mauritius:)
Brilliant quiz. For the first few times, I didn't notice the box with the color codes and was thinking it was one of the proximity map quizzes where the closer you get to the right country, the redder the guessed countries. Couldn't understand why all the countries I was guessing were red and none of them were correct. Lol. Really enjoyable quiz - thanks for creating it.
Got a bit lucky when it became clear that South America was the landmass of choice for me (just started typing in those countires without referring to the other legend details). Wasn't so lucky the first time. Great quiz!
Me neither! Other people seem to be enjoying it, but I think the explanation needs to be expanded. I’ll give it another go and see if it makes any more sense.
Okay, I understand now. Very quick thinking needed. A little more time would definitely make it more enjoyable. Those who relish the challenge of quick-fire could always try and beat their own fastest time.

I hope this helps making it a bit clearer
That being said, it seems indeed the average is decreasing quite a bit, so I'll up the time a little
Man, I thought I had first letter, last letter and continent right, but couldn't think of an M...E African country apart from Mozambique. Turns out I only had last letter and continent right...The colour difference between the purples is pretty small, but if I'd looked more closely I would've seen it. My brain was too busy panicking.
Awesome quiz though, one of the best I've seen in a long time, and spending the first try getting the hang of it seems to be par for the course!
I was debating what to do with that indeed, but since French Guiana is an overseas department and not an overseas territory, it seemed wrong to exclude it. A country can be on multiple landmasses though: for example Malaysia is on both Afro-Eurasia and Borneo, and Indonesia is on Timor, New Guinea and Borneo.
That's why France is on both the landmasses of Afro-Eurasia and the Americas, but the continent is still Europe.
It's up to the randomizer, but the chance of getting the same one 3 times in a row is 1 in 2601. So small, but seeing how many times this is being taken it'll definitely happen from time to time :)
I got a little hung up when I guessed US and got last letter correct...but I thought it was A (United states of americA) but turns out the last letter is S (United stateS). I'll remember the next time :-)
One suggestion - The colour options are sometimes hard to distinguish on smaller countries if not zoomed in. Especially the two greens (FL&LL and FL,LL&LA) and the maroon and pink.
Great quiz, but it seems to be repeating. I took it 4 times and 2 times it was cuba and 2 times liberia. There seems to be a smaller pool of countries than a random selection.
There is indeed a smaller pool of countries than all 196 that the algorithm chooses from, due to the 10,000 answer limit I can only have 51 different countries at a time. I swap them out regularly.
However, getting repeats is also part of a random process. We always think of randomness as something where there should be no repeats at all, but the chance of getting the same country twice in a row is 1 in 51, or just under 2%. If all takes would be people who took the quiz exactly twice and then left (22793 people), 447 of them would have been expected to see the same country twice. (Of course it will never be exactly 447, but it will be around that amount)
What you're describing, 2 sets of 2 in 4 takes, is a bit more rare to achieve, but still not impossible. If you take the quiz 4 times, the chance of this happening is 1 in 1327, or 0.07%. Seems small, but if all takes are from people who took the quiz exactly 4 times (11398 people), this would have happened about 9 times already.
I use the names as shown on the Countries of the World quiz, where the USA shows up as United States, with as last letter S. If it was purple you were looking for a country ending with S in North America
It would be nice if they would give you the right answer afterwards. I know it is grey on the map, but sometimes the country is so small, you can't see it very well.
Without changing the entire format I can't show the mystery country other than on the map. The ones you cannot see I have enlarged already, are there any specific others you are struggling with?
Please add to the quiz description that overseas territory is included as part of a country when on a different landmass. Example: France was lit yellow when the mystery country was French Guyana. Not the same landmass though.
This is an awesome quiz idea, very rare to have genuine new ideas on here. I can see myself having hours of fun on here, although I wish there was more time to think.
You were looking for North Korea (marked in green if you don't find it). China and Cambodia are both on the same continent and share the last letter (A), so are purple. Vietnam is in the right continent but doesn't share the first or last letter, so it's red. Both Congos and Sweden also don't share the first or last letter, but are on the right landmass, hence they are purple. All the rest you didn't guess so is coloured in the JetPunk default wrong answer red
Takes a little to learn what all the colours mean but once that's down pat its mostly straightforward
I also hate when I forget the one other country that starts with the same letter in the continent. In africa i forgot Madagascar existed, had every other african country starting with M covered.
Ok, I LOVE the idea of this. But the results this time were super confusing to me.
After not getting it the answer was apparently South Sudan, which is bright green for some reason? Is green the color for both "First Letter" and the mystery country?
Also, why were all the stans in Central Asia showing up as light blue? Is Africa considered part of the same landmass as Eurasia despite the Suez Canal??
Finally, after the whole map is revealed most of the countries show up as red, as if they're all on the same continent. Is red at the end just anything I didn't guess in addition to indicating the same continent?
If you don't guess the mystery country it shows up in default JetPunk green, if you do guess it it shows up in gray. I'll change this during the next update since I see where that can be confusing. All the Countries you didn't guess show up in default JetPunk wrong answer red, which doesn't have a specific meaning.
As for the landmass, I indeed ignore man-made canals, so the Suez canal and the Panama canal are excluded
I have no idea how to do this. I guessed a bunch that were white, then got to some red and time ran out. I still don't know what the correct answer was, as my red ones were Australia and New Zealand. The time isn't long enough, either - or maybe once I understand this more, it will be ok. Why isn't the answer shown, though?
The instructions are really unclear. It should tell you that the color in the key tells you what the mystery country has in common with the country you typed.
bro I got it in 3, i start this quiz by guessing usa, uk, then uae because it is easy for me to type all of them quickly, it turned out that uae was the correct answer. I got it in only 0:04.
Great quiz ! I'd love it if we could see the correct answer clearly written out when the time runs out, with some smaller countries it's very hard to see what the solution was :)
I guessed Jordan while the answer was Thailand, and jordan was only red, instead of purple as it has the same last letter. otherwise, this is my favourite quiz on this website.
Due to the 10,000 answer limit I can only have 51 possible answers at any given moment, which have an equal chance. I do swap out the possible answers every few months
I enjoy this quiz quite a bit. The answers do not seem all that random, though. Norway, Seychelles, Guinea Bissau, Grenada and Tuvalu come up much too frequently.
Thanks! I can see it when it is a bigger country, it's the small ones that are tough to ID. Also, the color looks a lot like the FL & LA color (to my eyes).
Hmm it should look more like just First Letter when you don't guess it. In any case I'm thinking of turning it grey like when you do guess it, I'll do that some time soon to avoid all the confusion
I love this, but am having troubles with a couple of the colours. I'm colour blind. Is it possible to make the FL and LL more distinct? Just a suggestion, it's pretty hard to navigate, but I understand if it's a lot of work.
I love the way that the countries become different colors based on different factors. My fastest time is actually 5 seconds, as I guessed the USA, which glew red, then I guess Mexico and it was right!
i think I'm going crazy, can you please explain this scenario, i guessed china, got me FL and LL, then i guessed sweden, got me the continent, turns out the country was north macedonia, perhaps you used a different name for china, or another name for north macedonia?
Hmm China should have been cyan for Last Letter and Landmass then (LL & LA), and it's using China and North Macedonia indeed. I'll check to see if my algorithm did something weird there, thanks for letting me know!
Edit: the code is assigning LL & LA to China for that one, not sure what happened. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Also I get Suriname quite often, like 1 in 3 rounds, so I feel like there might be something wrong with how the country is randomized. Might be something to look into
There's only 51 options due to the way the quiz is set up, so countries will reappear sooner than expected. Other than that the randomizer is something I cannot influence :)
Hope this helps :)

I suppose island countries aren't possible answers? or at least borderless ones?
Borderless countries can be answers, since the First Letter, Last Letter and Continent hints should be enough to be able to find the mystery country. But they are indeed a bit more challenging since less countries will be coloured!
I'm sure I would love this style of quiz, if I would understand it.
Great Quiz!
Also, one of the randomized quizzes I really feel like to play more and more times
Spectacular work!
It should already be lighting up in green afterwards if not guessed. Some may be difficult to see though. Did you have one that didn't light up?
Barring that, just a text box below that shows the name of the mystery country would be great!
Wonder what the chances of that are?
Have noticed that if it's an African country beginning with M, it's always Mauritius. North Macedonia keeps coming up as well.
Two hard scenarios, I find, are are African countries ending in A and Asian ones ending in N.
Okay, I understand now. Very quick thinking needed. A little more time would definitely make it more enjoyable. Those who relish the challenge of quick-fire could always try and beat their own fastest time.

You scored 196/196 = 100%
35.7% of test takers also scored 100%
The average score is 77
Your high score is 196
Your fastest time is 0:09

Maybe an orange or fluoro pink instead?

Thanks Albania
I replay it so much, but I often get the same answer. Is there a way you can make it so all the 196 countries got the same chance?
Cause i guessed Haiti and it was red so I skipped the Dominican R...
Thanks for the fun game
I give this quiz 5/5 stars!
I think thats pretty good haha
