Nice idea, but a bit easy, e.g. when I typed "East Timor" I got all hits connected with Portugal. Even when typing "Portugal" that would be weird.
Maybe a harder Version could be made where both answers are needed - country before and country after. In that version, you would need to type Soviet Union once, but all nowadays countries, too.
The reason I went with 'Spot one colony = get all of that country' is that we are spotting the countries that are different on the 1970 map. For your example, Portugal was the one that was different back then, since e.g. East Timor did not exist.
So spotting Portugal being different in Angola or East Timor should not matter: you spotted that Portugal is different
That being said, the harder version does sound interesting, I might look into that at some point
I really enjoyed it but it is a bit confusing - I didn't think of putting West Germany after I'd put the DDR, for example, and still don't totally understand why it didn't populate on its own, not that I'm that bothered. Perhaps it's just not possible to make it perfectly logical (or at least not the version of logic which obtains inside my tiny brane)
I do understand the confusion though. I tried to get a consistent set of answers by going by the countries visible on the 1970 map, which means that the entire Portuguese empire is one answer while there are 2 Germanys. By going by what's visible on the map I do think it's the most objective way though
I must admit I did also find it confusing (and I'm pretty sure I read the caveat? maybe didnt take it fully in?)
I don't think the quiz would be worse without them, or even that much harder (I don't think I used them but again didn't fully understand the caveat at first)
