Two of the nations below no longer exist as such. Due to the fact that the tournament was to be held in Europe for the second consecutive time, Argentina and Uruguay chose not enter the competition in protest. Additionally, due to the ongoing Spanish Civil War (1936-39), Spain did not participate. While Austria had qualified for the tournament, the Anschluss, uniting Austria and Germany, took place on 12 March, resulting in the dissolution of the Austrian National Team, the Österreichische Fußballnationalmannschaf. (Several Austrian players went on to compete in the tournament as part of the German side).
