/shrug My wife worked there for a decade as a programmer. I worked at similar firms for 25 years. It's just a business that at its core facilitates the transfer of risk - from those who have it and don't want it to those who don't have it and do want it. Every so often nobody wants any risk - financial crisis - and investment banks get stuck with a bunch of risk and nobody who will buy it at any price. Events like 2008 or 1929 occur as the result of borrowing (systemic leverage) used to acquire or finance that risk. Oversimplification? Sure but it's a small text box.
There's only 30? Didn't know that. Managed to get most of them with the hints. Never heard of United Technologies but should have guessed the other two I missed.
There's been only 30 companies for going on probably 70 years or so. Every so often the drop someone and add someone. In March they dumped AT&T for Apple.
Since 1896, actually. The DJ Industrial Average is actually not the first stock index. That's the DJ Transportation Average (1884). I worked at DJ Indexes for a few years.
I think it would be way too hard without the symbols for anyone who didn't have a particular interest in the stock market. I can think of half a dozen other big pharma companies off the top of my head, for example.
I took this quiz about a week ago and now it's been reset because the first company on the list got dropped. (Actually, it's being dropped as of June 26.) Until Tuesday, it will be the only company listed in the DJII that was in the original index (of 12 companies) in 1896. It's been on the list from 1896-1898, 1899-1901, and 1907-2018.
Yes, General Electric. It somehow feels melancholy that the last original titan has been chosen to step down. An ode to the inevitability of time, but a mark of GE's longevity, nonetheless.
Not that this index matters all that much anyway. It's a subjective selection by the Wall Street Journal, and is hardly a sufficient representation of the whole US market (according to Wikipedia). I think it's more of a prestige thing.
I wonder if a) they all have company softball teams and b) how much subterfuge would go on behind the scenes if there was a giant softball tournament with all of these teams?
I feel like Dow is kind of the same as IBM in terms of having or not having the stock symbol, you could go either way but right now it seems inconsistent. Also, what happened to the comment I made on here like two weeks ago about Raytheon? Do you delete comments that aren't applicable when a quiz gets updated?
I think it's because the official name of CAT is Caterpiller, and of DOW is Dow, inc., but IBM is just IBM? Not a difference for DOW but I appreciated the CAT hint as well, and I think IBM could also be added for consistency's sake. It's better than making the quiz harder than it is.
Must be too early in the morning. I started the quiz by putting in Stock symbols instead of typing out the company names. Was coming to the comments to suggest accepting them... and saw the discussion about whether or not they should be displayed. I somehow missed seeing that column throughout the entire quiz.
Of course, they are not unique in this regard. I'd argue that if Facebook ceased to exist the world would be a far better place.

It’s definitely not a construction company. And construction equipment/industry sales account for a minority of its overall sales.
