They joined in 1916 because of repeated German encroachments into their African colonies and the sinking of Portuguese ships in the Atlantic by German submarines.
+2
Level 84
May 29, 2021
Yep. And the British persuaded the Portuguese to seize Central Powers ships in Lisbon. After all the German shenanigans on the high seas and in Africa, the Portuguese were happy to comply. Which garnered them a declaration of war from both Germany and Austria-Hungary.

Would never have guessed Newfoundland. I'm Canadian and I do know that it did not join the Confederation until 49, but I admit I never thought of what kind of status it had before that. Thanks for fixing that :).

before WWII in the 1930s Newfoundland was an English Colony still. I learned this the hardway playing a game called Calm before the Storm, which takes place pre-WWII days, if you were the US and attacked Canada for resources the UK (England) would attack you .

Where's India? Even by your own source, Wikipedia, they lost over 60K military, and were a separate country within the Commonwealth, like Australia or Canada.

Level 86
Feb 22, 2016
No, India was a colony, not a dominion.
+8
Level 60
Mar 1, 2016
Yeah. UK should really be "British Empire" excluding dominions to make this clearer.
+2
Level 42
Nov 11, 2018
By this logic, Australia and New Zealand should also be omitted as they were also dominions at this time.

The Union of South Africa was formed on 31 May 1910, uniting four colonies into a dominion with the same status as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Newfoundland. The Union engaged in an invasion of German South West Africa independent of the UK, took over the invasion of Tanganyika and sent troops to Palestine and the Western Front.

At the end of the war it was rewarded with a mandate over South West Africa (Namibia), which it treated as an integral part of South Africa until 1990.

"The Serbian Army declined severely towards the end of the war, falling from about 420,000[2] at its peak to about 100,000 at the moment of liberation. The Kingdom of Serbia lost more than 1,200,000 inhabitants during the war (both army and civilian losses), which represented over 29% of its overall population and 60% of its male population"

Even though the caveat states sovereign states that existed in 1914, I feel that India should have been included here. Although, India was a British colony until 1947, it had some sort of autonomy. The Indian Army was independent of the British Army. More than 70,000 Indian soldiers died in the Great War and not including India in this quiz makes me feel uneasy, rather uncomfortable. India is a founding member of several international organisations, including the League of Nations and the United Nations despite being a colony at that time. So, why is it not included here? Please consider revising.
