Arguably Honshu is the most globally significant of these islands. Java is more populous, but its global economic impact is less. Great Britain is comparable in economic importance, but its population is less.
What, you are correct, The UK is the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". So therefore Great Britain must include all the outlying English, Scottish and Welsh islands, such as Wight, Skye and Anglesey. So I don't understand why "Great Britain" is given as the correct answer to the question, surely it should be just "Britain"?
Great Britain is the name of the big island, but the term is also used to include the smaller islands. Context is the key - geographically the term usually refers just to the main island.
Sort of similar is that Puerto Rico isn't a state or part of one, despite being a part of the United States. The states aren't the only part of the USA, like GB and NI aren't the only parts of the UK
I think every Brit, German and French person has heard of it purely because it’s something of a rite of passage to go on holiday there as a child. And then again as an adult, to drink copiously and throw up on people.
i literally entered gran canaria (capital las palmas), la palma, and even tenerife and lanzarote for good measure, but completely forgot about mallorca. my brain is tired.
As a Canadian, I'm offended! No, but seriously, JetPunk really shouldn't make it about "relevancy". If you replace PEI with something like, say Long Island, which 99% of you know, you're not getting any smarter nor are you learning anything. You're just regurgitating the same information over and over. The point of quizzes like these is to teach you new things... now a couple people will know what Prince Edward Island is. It's always good to have a good balance in answers in quizzes too. North, South, Great Britain, Iceland, yeah those are easy. Then they get a little more difficult with Hokkaido and Honshu. Then a little more difficult. Then you're at the hardest level, Prince Edward Island. JetPunk has taught me many things, and I want it to stay that way.
I agree. I had no idea what the answer to that question was, but now I've learned something. And I knew 18 other answers, so it's nice to throw a few tough ones into the mix. Otherwise it's just a typing quiz.
so for Long Island, what would the city be? About 58% of the New York city population is on Long Island, which leaves about 42% not on Long Island (17% of which is on the USA mainland). If given New York as the city, I might be inclined to say Manhattan island instead of Long Island.
I tried 'new zealand north island' and 'new zealand south island' but they didnt count. I think they should?
Also...I feel a bit uneasy about the ireland ine. Yes, great Britain is an island of 3 countries. But the ireland that contains ireland contains two separate countries. Ireland and northern ireland. Theyre not the same country. Maybe its ok but it doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the clues I feel.
This quiz is about islands. There is an island called Ireland and the biggest city on the island of Ireland is Dublin. This quiz has nothing to do with countries, nations, sovereign states, overseas territories etc.
So few*, unless you are responding to the tendency for midgets to get this answer correct. And I have no explanation for that.
As to why so few people get PEI... it's by far the least famous island of all of these. Having far and away the lowest population aside from Greenland, and Greenland is the largest island in the world so it's well known for other reasons. Are Charlottetown is by an even wider margin the least famous city of all of these cities. Even if you had heard of PEI there's a good chance you wouldn't know the names of any cities on it. I'm actually surprised that 23% got it - seems pretty high. Completely obscure answer next to every other one on the quiz.
Started typing UK, Ireland, Indonesia, Japan... Got angry, quiz is definitely broken. Then re-read description, will try again after coffee - 7am too early for a quiz obviously.
It's asking for the biggest city on that island. Yes, it includes both Haiti and Dominican Republic. And Santo Domingo is the biggest city between those two countries, so it's the biggest city on the whole island.

Careful though, it's one of the only easy ones in that quiz!
