Certainly Australia is the largest country as a percentage of the "ontinent" on which it lies. But I'm wondering why Mongolia isn't one of the lowest countries for pollution exposure. It's a huge territory with a nomadic base, virtually no manufacturing, and only mining.

I think that dust from deserts is also counted in air pollution.

I'm thinking that there have to be small island countries, primarily in the Pacific, that have to qualify there as well.

Fixed the misspelling. Mongolia probably also gets a lot of pollution from China.

As much fun as it is to blame others, Mongolia has pretty much generated their problem all on their own. Here's an eye opening story. Although it's from 2017, things haven't exactly changed for the better.

One quotation: "80 percent of all pollution in Ulaanbaatar is caused by ger stoves, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). ... and the organization predicts the situation will worsen over the next 10 years."

Interesting. I retract my statement. That actually makes more sense.

Ulaanbaatar is also a VERY polluted city (a quick Google search shows it was worse than Delhi and Beijing in 2016), and 1/3 of the country lives there

nice questions :) an extra 30 seconds wouldn't hurt. I still needed 5 more questions and had time for one, saw franco.. and westernmost flashing by so had a quick wild guess and actually got those right without time to think about it. But yea, not time to guess the others or read the questions properly.

Was surprised iceland wasnt on the lowest airpolution, maybe they use a lot of snowmobiles?

+6
Level 71
Jul 18, 2022
I mean it is kinda weird. The French never directly colonized Egypt the way the British did, and a quick Google search tells me that English is more widely spoken than French. If they are part of the Francophonie that's understable--many countries are part of both (the Francophonie and the Commonwealth)--but I find it head-scratching that Egypt is not part of the Commonwealth.

Dominion of Canada was never ever ever official. The founding statutes coined "Dominion" as a generic but the name of the dominion was and is "Canada," pure and simple. Analogue: Do our southern neighbours refer to the Republic of the United States of America? Nope.

But that's not how time zones work. The international date line bends to accomodate for Alaska's awkward shape and the Aleutian Islands are in GMT -10. It would be hugely inconvenient if part of Alaska was a whole day ahead of the rest.

I don't understand... how does Saudi Arabia have a greater land area with a desert or tundra biome than either Canada or Russia? Russia is 8 times larger than Saudi Arabia. I guess Russia has a lot of taiga or steppe and actually doesn't have much tundra, but this is still quite surprising to me.

+2
Level 55
Apr 5, 2022
Completely sure. Check the data of the corresponding quiz, if you want. Some Pacifioc island countries are well ranked, but not as high as Canada. Remember that it's human exposure, so it also partially depends of the area and population of the concerned country.
+1
Level 89
Jul 20, 2022
It also probably depends on the use of fuels for heating and cooking. Traditional low-tech wood-burning methods would likely create more air pollution in these countries than the methods used in more heavily populated, more developed countries.
