I had 3 left and was trying to think of iconic commentary to help. Then all I could hear was Dennis Bergkamp Dennis Bergkamp Dennis Bergkamp Dennis Bergkamp Dennis Bergkamp
I’m not a fan of the whole ‘Hall of fame’ thing, it’s an Americanism we can do without.
But the initial list is a bit strange. What is the criteria? Surely Ryan Giggs should be in ahead of….well, anyone. He has more PL winners medals than anyone else. Given this is the ‘Premier League hall of fame’, what more does he need to do to get in? I would say he was at least as influential in Utd’s continued success as Cantona, Keane and Beckham. I understand Rooney being included on the back of his fantastic goal scoring record. Giggsy’s omission does seem strange. I can only assume, his on-going ehhh “off field issues” have counted against him.
For the record, I’m not a Utd fan. It just looks like a bit of a popularity contest rather than being done on any sporting merit. That would explain Beckham over Scholes as well, given their England careers and Beckham’s career at Real etc. are not part of the PL and thus, I assume, aren’t considered.
Usually I’d agree about Americanisms, but I actually like the fact that the Premier League wants to recognise its legends in a more official way. What I don’t like - and I suspect this is where your gripe also comes in - is that the public gets to vote on the majority of the inductees. In the current roster of nominees are the likes of Matt Le Tissier, Les Ferdinand and Tony Adams, who are, in my view, completely worthy entrants, but I can’t see getting *voted* in for a long time.
Of the 25 nominees, I think these will be the ones inducted:
What I dislike most is how you have to get voted in. Of course to keep interest going you can only inaugurate a few players every year, but why the fuck would you need to vote in players like the coles, the ferdinands, van nistelrooy, van persie, kompany, the nevilles, adams, terry or le tissier not yet in? How are they not part of a hall of fame of the premier league?
I’m surprised that Giggs isn’t here, even with it being done by vote. I’m an Arsenal fan, but Giggs was probably still the first name that came to mind. And there are tonnes of players who have been, nonetheless, icons of the PL and their clubs. Le Tissier, Di Canio, Sheringham, Seaman, Cole (at least three of ‘em), Sol Campbell, Yorke, Ince, Parlour, Hasselbank, Vialli… even ‘The Robot’ Peter Crouch!
But for Giggs to be out while Kompany is in? Hell, I’d have put in Yaya Toure before Kompany!
Agree with Algernon. Like him I'm very much not a Manure fan but Giggs seems an odd omission, and I'd put Scholes, Schmeichel and even (Rio) Ferdinand in ahead of Beckham. I've nothing against the squeaky voiced tattoo panel but the height of his career was mostly at RM.
I don’t think Giggs’s omission is that strange given the ongoing court case against him. Should he be found not guilty, I suspect he’ll be inducted pretty soon after.
Beckham happens to be my all-time favourite player, though I agree that there are a number of players who should have been inducted before him. That said, that’s the danger when you let the public vote.
Speak for yourself, Quizboy. Yanks take a lot of stick on here for their ignorance about European football. I was interested to read Ed's post. Yours was rude.
Cantona, John Terry (ask Wayne Bridge), Giggsy (obvious that), Stan Collymore (ask Ulrika Jonsson). Any others? Was it Adrian Mutu who was done for coke while at Chelsea? Lee Hughes for that car accident, Adam Johnson, Gilfi Sigurdson, and allegedly Mason Greenwood. There must be dozens more.
I think this hall of fame is ridiculous. Football ( Soccer ) did not begin in 1992 . What about Best , Dalglish , Hansen ,Charlton, etc . And if we have to have a premier hall of fame then G iggs should have been one of the first named .
lol there goes another year where giggs doesn't get nominated, let alone inducted. suppose virtue signalling doesn't extend to racism when john terry has now been inducted. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE
GREAT quiz! Nommed!
Thanks for taking the quiz and I'm glad you're enjoying it!
