I, too, am wondering about the criteria. The top twenty has only 16 names and there is little consistency among the named teams:

The Baltimore Bullets(original franchise), Indianapolis Olympians, St Louis Bombers, Providence Steam Rollers, New York Cosmos, Chester City FC, and Chicago Stags franchises all folded

The Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee and changed the name to Brewers, the Washington Senators moved to Minnesota and changed the name to Twins, the Seattle Supersonics moved to Oklahoma City and changed the name to Thunder, the Houston Oilers moved to Nashville and changed the name to Titans, the Hartford Whalers moved to North Carolina and changed the name to Hurricanes, the Wimbledon FC became the Milton Keynes Dons, the Syracuse Nationals moved to Philadelphia and changed the name to 76ers

The Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles

The Kansas City Knights were a minor league basketball team that folded and would not in any case be considered "top"

Well, actually the Seattle Pilots is a legitimate answer since they actually went bankrupt. MLB accepted a bid by a replacement team ownership group in late 1969 from Milwaukee (of which Bud Selig was a partner in) and the Brewers were granted the replacement franchise. In the case of many of these teams, the owners simply sold the team and they were subsequently re-located or the then present owner(s) moved them on their own. BTW, the Baltimore Bullets were originally the Chicago Packers, the NBA's first true expansion team in 1961.

You need to add the Montreal wanderers (NHL), Pittsburgh Pirates (not the MLB team but there was once an NHL team) the Colorado Rockies (now the new jersey devils- NHL) Montreal Maroons- NHL, and the Oakland seals/ California golden seals. Also the Philadelphia Quakers now the Philadelphia Flyers (NHL), the Atlanta Thrashers (NHL) the original Winnipeg Jets, turned into the Arizona Coyotes and turned back into the jets, and a new coyotes team was created. Also the Ottawa Senators (they were the same name but then returned after more than 70 years). Then the Quebec Nordiques now the colorado avalanche. Also, the Toronto areans and the Toronto st Patricks, the St Louis eagles, Minnesota north stars, and the hamilton tigers. Sorry for all this, but just want to make this better even though it's already amazing, and I'm probably forgetting other NHL teams, but I don't want to bug you anymore just because I'm an NHL nerd. But overall, great quiz though.
