Damn, Scand "i" navia, not Scand "a" navia, spelling got me on that one. Isn't the Low Countries also called the Lowlands? I guess Cape Horn isn't the same as Horn of Africa?

The Lowlands: the region of Scotland lying south and east of the Scottish Highlands; Cape Horn: the southernmost point of South America, on a Chilean island south of Tierra del Fuego

Isn't Caucasus just the mountain range and Caucasia the region? Or is it the English language giving more to mix up?

Excellent quiz, testing genuine knowledge of the respective regions. Not everyone would ever get them all right.

Well done!

I only got Levant because of ISIS/ISIL. Never heard of the term before they burst into the scene.

There are an awful lot of alternative names for Maghreb on Wikipedia. Do you give credit for any of them?

No. Which one did you try? They all seem pretty awkward to me.

Barbary coast? I tried Berbers, Barbary Barbary coast.
+3
Level 60
Jun 1, 2019
Berbers is a term, considered derogative by many, for a group of peoples (Tuareg, Shawi, Kabyle, etc), who name themselves Amazigh.

the term Barbary Coast is not used anymore, but when it was it didn't refer to a group of countries, but to the coastal regions.

I don't think any of those is commonly used in English nowadays. NW or Northern Africa sounds much more loosely defined.

I couldn't quite remember Maghreb. I tried all kinds but the term alluded me. Good quiz.

I think Iran should be included in the "Gulf States". Otherwise, it should be required "Arab Gulf States".
+1
Level 74
Mar 6, 2019
That wiki page describes it as "Arab states of the Persian Gulf". Not having Iran in there confused me into thinking that the quiz wanted some variant of "arab states" since Iran is on the gulf, but not arab and I thought its omission was significant.

I suggest accepting other vowel for the second syllable of Caucacus and Scandinavia. Especially a u in the former and an a in the latter.

Had to resort to Google, which I think is fair when I'm close enough to the right spelling that Google will suggest the right spelling when I type it in.

I most often use this when the answer is Ouagadougou.

I knew when I typed "Mahgreb" it looked wrong, but I should've kept trying. "Caucuses" was also clearly wrong in hindsight.

But Pacific "Ring"? I left three answers on the table.

It's geographically below the Sahara so... I didn't get it but it makes sense. Maybe a wider range of countries would've helped.

Benelux is not really a region. But a construct of the three states.
+2
Level 62
Aug 18, 2020
The region has been called the Low Countries for like a thousand years. In the past it also uncluded some parts of what is now Northern France and Western Germany though.

It's the same with the Caucasus region. It should also include parts of Russia

The Low Countries as a historical and geographic region does indeed include parts of France and Germany, specifically East Frisia and the former Prussian Upper Guelders in Germany, and French Flanders and French Hainault in France. The Benelux refers exclusively to the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, without including these other regions. But yeah, in colloquial usage the two are used pretty much interchangably.

Can you add Barbary Coast for Maghreb? It covers the same region and has as much historical precedence, and for people like me it’s what comes to mind before Maghreb for these nations along the North African coast.
