Okay, okay, I've added some more (somewhat-inexact) synonyms for "crabbit" and "dreich". There were already lots of synonyms for "firth" ("inlet", "river mouth", "fjord", etc.). "Croft" and "crofter" are both common words, though perhaps not if you live in the city. "Corbie" is expected to be difficult, though it does appear in a traditional folk song, and can be deduced by anyone who recognizes the Latin root.
The Scottish language is sadly deteriorating in modern times. I saw a study in which researchers dialed random phone numbers in Scotland and asked the person who answered "D'ye ken Scots?" Only about one third answered "aye". (The rest either answered "no" or, worse, "yes".)
I love listening to Swedish dramas (Wallander) because Swedish has words that are the same or similar. Especially braw. Which always makes me happy for some reason.
My DNA is 52%Scottish, but I only got 8 correct answers. (I think there could be more options for "firth",) I appreciate learning some. So, this must be where the term "crabby" for a grouch came from!
And "Bonnie" & "Braw" can be used interchangeably for "pretty".
