Why didn't Hakeem Olajuwon play for the Nigerian team?

From his Wiki page: "Olajuwon became a naturalized American citizen on April 2, 1993. For the 1996 Olympics, he received a FIBA exemption and was eligible to play for Dream Team III. "

Surprised Gregg Popovich never coached this team. And Vince Carter's dunk over the 7'2" Frenchman in the 2000 Olympics is the most hilarious distillation of the America/France relationship ever caught on film.

33% Steve Smith correct . . . my guess is 80% of people just typed in "Smith" as most common US surname . . . like I did!

Too bad. He would dominate in international play where defense has been made illegal and the 3-point line is shorter than in the NBA.

But we have Lillard now, who is 90% of what Steph is from three.

Why hasn't he been on one of these teams? Does he choose not to play?

Level 59
Aug 13, 2021
Yes and no. Back in 2012, he wasn't invited to the Team USA even though he played on 2010 FIBA World Cup and later on 2014 FIBA World Cup edition. In 2016 he was invited, but chose not to play (personal reasons, also he had a slight problems with injury). Now, he also withdrew from the list because of an injury. Maybe Paris 2024 :)

That 2004 team... you can look at the personalities and tell it's going to underachieve. Iverson, Marbury, Carmelo, Lamar Odom? To a lesser extent, Lebron James? Not gonna be good chemistry. Too many egos.

The fact that Keldon Johnson made an Olympic roster is nothing short than astonishing. Amazing
