yeah along with shot put, javelin, hammer throw, high jump, triple jump, pole vault, relay race, hurdles, etc... lots of stuff under the umbrella of "athletics" or track and field
It is kind of strange how the Olympics classify sports. Events as different as waterpolo (a team sport) and diving and swimming are sub-categories of aquatics, whereas sports as similar as baseball and softball merit their own category.
It might have something to do with the governing bodies of the sports. Both waterpolo and diving are governed by a body called FINA. Baseball and Softball have been governed by 2 separate organizations until 2013 when the two merged.
Golf was new in 2016 (technically they also had it in 1900/1904). Karate, skateboarding, climbing, and surfing are brand-new. Baseball/softball are "new"--dropped from the Olympics after 2008 but brought back now.
If you wear a costume, put on make-up, utilise choreography and music, and are scored by judges who must consider the artistic merit of your act, then you're not playing a sport. You're performing art.
While we're here, if you play your "sport" through a computer (x-box etc), you're a gamer, not an athlete.
Nothing wrong with either of those things: embrace them as they are worthwhile endeavours. Just
Computer games are called esports these days, may make it to the Olympics soon.
And what's wrong with wearing make-up? Many other sports are subjectively judged too (diving, surfing etc.), although these may be judged by AI in future :)
I appreciate that refereeing calls etc can be subjective, however, I do have issue with sports where the end results are based on opinion. Also, I agree about esports! The Olympics should be about elite sports people. By all means, set up a separate esports Olympics, but keep them separate as they are not remotely the same thing!
There's a lot of gray area here. The events that are judged qualitatively, rather than just quantitatively, also generally require exceptional athleticism and precision of physical performance. There really isn't a simple way to differentiate in the way you are describing.
Gymnasts, ice dancers, etc, are mostly judged on athletic/technical elements. Artistry is only part of their score. These events could be reduced to just a series of feats, but they're among the most-watched Olympic sports because they're entertaining.
Love how my brain, knowing the answers are in alphabetical order and time is winding down, just starts spitting out things that fit. Spearfishing. Ultimate frisbee. Jai alai. Hurling. Fox hunting. Demolition derby. Spelunking. Lawn darts. Bocce. Ballroom dancing.
It's a true shame that the blatantly biased IOC continues to allow and encourage so-called "sports" like "wrestling", "swimming", and "football", but won't acknowledge the true fundamentals of athletic achievement, like wife-carrying, cheese-rolling, and wet T-shirt contests.
Yeah, not sure how that qualifies as a sport, or at least one worthy of Olympic inclusion. But the definition of “sport” is pretty arbitrary and ‘sports’ do come and go from the Olympics. I’m still struggling to see why Break dancing should be in and something like Ball room dancing isn’t, not that I consider either a ‘sport’. But then it’s probably similar to why some martial arts are included and others aren't.
I would have been guessing for a long time before I got Breakdancing though.
I'm not sure why people are so surprised/dismayed about breakdancing being included. It definitely requires athleticism and skill to do well, and personally I think it's fun to watch. Seems like a worthy inclusion to me.
My preference would be for only empirically-measurable events. I know that eliminates more than just breakdancing (figure skating, dressage, to a lesser extent diving, gymnastics) but perhaps there could be a separate "subjective sports" Olympics.
My fault, but is there any more generous type-ins for Taekwondo that could be added? Tai instead of Tae... and Kwando instead of kwondo maybe? I was trying Taekwando. Had to check the spelling, didn't count it as cheating as I knew the answer!
Your problem is that most of the things you're thinking of are "Athletics". That doesn't really have to do with being a native speaker, but more how the Olympics decides to organize their events.
There's an error calling it "Field hockey". The sport is called Hockey and the Olympic website lists it as such. I spent ages trying to find a sport to fit between the two other F sports...

don't call them sports.

I watched the entire thing..I enjoy the Olympics.
One more thing: Shouldn't American Football, Horse Racing, Bull Riding, Cricket, Bowling, Jai Alai, Polo and Squash be on the Games?????

according to the website Lacrosse and Karate are missing from this list.
The word Field is totally redundant.
