Even though Bogota was for a time called Santafé de Bogotá (Holy Faith of Bogota), that wasn’t its original name. Bogota is an indigenous word. The name Buenos Aires is a shortened version of the original "Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre" (Our Lady, Mary of the Fair Winds).
Fun fact: Colombia was originally chosen as the host for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. However, Mexico ended up hosting it. Colombia ended up not qualifying for that tournament.
