Infect all the countries of the world that appeared in the mobile game Plague Inc. Can you infect the entire world before the cure is fully developed?
Some individual countries (usually more obscure ones) are grouped together as greater regions. Try to guess their geographical positions or major constituent countries.
As there are many variant maps in different consoles, the map of this quiz follows the Android version.
For some reason Plague Inc. removed a lot of islands in its map. I think it has something to do with the software they used to make the game, in which non-contiguous lands are harder to program.
e.g., if Alaska were still part of United States, Alaska would not turn red even when United States is fully infected. So they had to make Alaska part of Canada instead.
Weird choice to combine massive regions of West and East Africa but have south Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe all separate. I only ever played the flash original and i think there were way less countries
Nice SVG! I've never heard of Plague Inc but I came up with all of them besides Central Asia since I had assumed it was something like 'dskhnvgebxgtrecfrwyhdguhnstan'.
Levant, Near East, Phoenicia, Syria (as the roman provinces), Holy Lands, Crusader States... could find quite a lot of names of various inflamatory potential indeed
I've always been kinda surprised the Congo or Mongolia weren't independent, seem like big enough countries to warrant being their own thing. Is there anywhere that the plague inc. creators say why they made the map the way they did?
Thanks for all the nominations and nice comments, and thanks for the feature!
Since many people asked, I think the main reason for designing such a map is for game balance. In Plague Inc., different countries have different climates, economic conditions, population densities, and infrastructures that could affect disease transmission. E.g., rich countries (mostly in the West) are harder to infect than poor ones; island countries often only have ports and can only be infected via water transmission, etc. Thus, some landlocked countries are not merged to ensure a moderate number of countries are reachable only by land transmission, and many island nations and rich countries are merged so that the game isn't too hard. In this way, a balance of climates and population densities is achieved. This somehow makes the gaming experience better, but it also becomes less applicable to real-life scenarios, which is one of the creator's aims.
I got them all eventually, but guessing the ones I didn't know were a little strange. Do you have to give the names the regions are called in the game? Otherwise, why not accept major constituent countries like Israel or Lebanon for the Middle East...or common names for the region like The Levant? Same with Thailand or Indochina for southeast Asia or western Africa instead of just west Africa etc.?
(I apologize for my malodorous grammar. This is the Internet, not a prestigious educational institution. I talk like an American teenager. Deal with it.)
I've never played or even heard of this game, but as a geography nerd, the region names were straightforward enough to figure out, and I got the whole map with plenty of time to spare.
Anyways, fun quiz!

(On mobile it is anyway)
awesome idea BTW would love to see more of the same aspect (nominated)
