Dot to dot mode... er 'Show missing borders' functionality is now available! I've only gone through the map once to ensure the dots are properly placed, so some errors may still occur, but hopefully it'll give you a hint when you get down to the end and missed 3 somewhere on the map (probably New Zealand).
but please change tyrhenian to "tyrrhenian" as that is the correct spelling, and I was wondering for 5 minutes what else could it be :D
If you used just the stroke of the paths to make the tracings, you could try a command like this: .svg-holder .svg-incorrect { stroke: #FF6666 !important; }
Theoretically, it should convert the strokes to red when incorrect. If it involves fill though or some other property, this probably won't work.
For Palestine, I don't think it should be included - not for any political reasons, simply I think this quiz is a massive extension of all JetPunk knowledge and for the most part, it isn't an accepted answer in any country quizzes. In my view I'd feel like it wouldn't be 'fair' if I finished the quiz and had that as a missing answer. Just my thoughts!
Maracaibo was sneaky, but I found it ;).
Just one thing. USA-Pacific and UK-Atlantic appear darker and/or thicker than the other lines.
Yeah, I thought I had fixed those borders in the most recent update, but it's still showing that way on JP. When I view it in Inkscape, it isn't any darker than the other lines. I'll look at it again.
Apart from the Netherlands Caribbean Sea one mentioned, having run the whole quiz through four more times - Solomon Islands and Coral Sea is missing I think... Pretty sure it borders it looking at Google Earth and the normal sources
6 more... wow, I thought it was only a couple more!
And this is without the (rightly I think) ignored Antarctica claims...I'm not sure when I mentioned this to you as an idea that I could foresee 660+...
should there be Norway-Atlantic Ocean for Bouvet Island?
also I wonder if type-ins can be added to make life easier. Eg typing the first 3 letters of countries to get the borders done? eg ITAFRA would get Italy-France. Or something like URUGUAY-ALL-ARGENTINA-BRAZIL so that if you know all borders of a country in alphabetical order you can get them all with a single long string?
Nice job on the 100% though! Last time I got all but 2, and after scanning the map for 5 minutes realized I had forgotten New Zealand.
As you say implementation for the 'mega type-in' wouldn't be easy, also depends how much time you would want to spend in creating the type-in string - fastest way is probably to allow just for exact typing of JetPunk names (as in the answer to the countries of the world quiz) in alphabetical order.
There are quite a few errors and mistakes btw, which I would point out below just to let you know
2. The Kaliningrad coast only appears when I type Russia-Finland, and when I do type that, it shows that I’ve typed 2 answers.
3. Only “Tonki” is accepted, not Tonkin. (Problem only shows up when Tonkin is the first word in an answer pair)
4. Davis Strait, not “Striat”
5. NZ-Cook Strait, not Inlet
6. When I type Amundsen-Canada, Ungava Bay in Northern Quebec also lights up
7. When I type Indonesia-Tomini, extra places light up like northeastern Flores, the north coasts of the Alor Islands just to its east, and the western coasts of the Aru Islands below New Guinea’s Bird’s Head peninsula.
8. Either “Kolyuchin, Chaun” or “Kolyuchinskaya, Chaunskaya” , not “Kolyuchinskya, Chaunskya”
Because I don't hate people who aren't from North America?
But alas, didn't think of that at the time, so I added it instead...
A few things:
1 if you have Bahrain-Saudi Arabia border which is a bridge why don't you have Singapore-Malaysia? Although I suppose there is a shared artificial island in the first one
2 Titicaca lake please :)
3 This may be somewhat complicated but it would be nice to see if you are missing a land border or a water one, maybe by shading the cells with different colours?
2. Titicaca is already plotted, just waiting the next push. I was planning to wait until I have all the coordinates plotted for the 'show missing borders' functionality, but I've got a lot of other additions as well, so I might push them all separate from the missing dots.
3. Ooh, that's a good idea. If JetPunk allows importing of cell formats like it does for type-ins, that would be trivial to implement.
Svalbard... is missing from this map. I'll add it.
Here is the IHO source document: https://www.vliz.be/imisdocs/publications/ocrd/76595.pdf
Hope this is a concrete enough persuasion…:)
Yeah, that's pretty persuasive. The update might take some time as I expect most of the next 4 days will be spent exploring this hierarchy. So... I hate you for introducing me to this rabbit hole, and thanks!
1. When I type Australia-St Vincent gulf, the west coast of Tasmania appears (it’s shaded one more time when I type Aus-Bight, causing the western Tasmanian coast to be thicker)
2. When I type Uk-Caribbean, the north coast of St Martin on the French side appears.
3. When I type France-Caribbean, the France-Netherlands border on St Martin appears (this border is shaded one more time when I type Fr-Ne, and makes the border thicker than usual)
Anyway, if you're looking for a 750th answer, I guess you forgot the chinese side of the Taiwan strait, didn't you?
I also wonder if some other african lakes on borders should be added or not. I mean, if there are the Dead Sea and the Lake of the Woods, why not Lake Kivu, Lake Edward and Lake Albert? They are not even lesser-known than Lake Turkana, I think. But then you'd have to consider Lake Mweru and Lake Kariba as well... I don't know ^^. And finally, I realize that Lake Chad is ALSO on borders, and it's quite well-known, but it's a complicated case since it has shrunk badly these last decades.
Was it intended to remove the blue color for water borders? It was cool.
I see you've added Taiwan Strait for China, that's good. And I learned Bohai Sea today... it's getting really obscure, isn't it? ;)
Maybe for next time consider my above suggestions about African lakes? (if you could give me a reply about that, that would be nice, even if you're not about to include those)
(Szczecin Lagoon. That'll be fun to spell.)
(Szczecin Lagoon. That'll be fun to spell.)
I had anticipated way more additions to this update, but after seeing one of your previous replies, I’m thinking the wait might be worth it ;))
I think nailing Molucca’s spelling is better since such loopholes defeats the purpose of this quiz; of course coincidences like guinea-Ivory Coast or Cambodia-Thailand don’t count since requiring to type “gulf of” in such cases are too absurd even for this quiz imo.
Should be blue but not: Madagascar-Indian Ocean
Should be white but not: Eswatini-South Africa, Ethiopia-South Sudan, Indonesia-Malaysia
But 505/753 on my first try is good enough. Thank you lots for this quiz, can't even imagine how much time it took.
Some others have commented already, but there are some issues with blue/white accuracy as well as alphabetical issues (R Congo/DR Congo, Indonesia/East Timor, Macedonia/Kosovo)
As it is very detailed on the minutiae of fluidity of seas, you should probably have them set as North Macedonia and Federated States of Micronesia
Also, Malacca Strait counts for Molucca as well, but not vice versa
Just discovered Gulf of Mannar India/Sri Lanka
But in this case, it's because I didn't consider Campeche when making this quiz :).
Specifically it appears to be hiding under the Botswana/Zimbabwe border, rather than the more plausible Namibia/Zambia one.
Halmahera Sea?
More leniency on spelling would be good too.
Also Ethiopia - South Sudan, Eswatini - South Africa
I started with Yemen-Aden, which led me to notice a bug with the dots. The dots for Yemen-Arabian and Yemen-Aden are reversed, so the positions are right, but the Yemen-Aden dot is on the Yemen-Arabian line and vice-versa.
Do you plan on ever making a version including maritime borders? That could be an interesting idea. This is really neat and detailed, thank you for making it!
You only get 4 points.
Still just 4 points.
Looks like only 100% will get you five points for this quiz. Only 100% will take you above 95% percentile.
Just need to remember RussiaKolyma for next time (without forgetting the others).
By the way, the dot for the Botswana-Zambia border is wrongly placed, it is placed over the Botswana-Zimbabwe border, so once you enter this last border the dot between zimbabwe and botswana is still there.
The border is a result of the settling of the Hans Island dispute, splitting Hans Island down the middle as of June 14, 2022. (Then again I wouldn’t be shocked if you already knew all this)
e.g. as HydraMite said, to draw the border between the USA and Canada, you type "USACanada".
To draw the border between the USA and Mexico, you type "USAMexico" etc.
Do that for every country in the world and you will fill in the map.
Also, consider adopting the following mantra: Google is not the source of all truth. Google is occasionally wrong.
Is the Strait of Sicily too small to include?
I don't think I've got what it takes to do Africa, or even Europe, or SEA. I started in Canada and started skipping the smaller stuff by the time I got to Nicaragua.
Fun idea though. I wish I had someone to dictate to.
If I could change something, I'd have the names of bodies of water pop up on the map after you've guessed them.
I have the countries, and most major bodies of water memorized, but I am doubtful that >20% of the takers have stuff like this committed to memory:
Finland-Gulf of Bothnia
Madagascar-Mozambique Strait
Italy-Tyrrhenian Sea
Canada-Gulf of St Lawrence
United Kingdom-Celtic Sea
Tanzania-Lake Tanganyika
Denmark-Kattegat
Denmark-Skagerrak
Spain-Alboran Sea
I've got nothing against using it as a training tool, just wondering what the score would look like it the jetpunk participants did it by memory only.
Shoutout to the elusive tease, number 753, Turkmenistan Garabogazkol Basin!
Pechora
Chaunskaya
Kolyuchinskaya
Kolyma
Chosha
Boni
Savu
Flores
Libyan
Levantine
Garabogazkol
Norton
Spencer
St Vincent
Turkana
Kotzebue
Coronation
Amundsen (I'd heard of the one in the Antarctic, but not the one in this quiz)
My only real issue is assuming that Palestine is part of Israel...
Yes.
And No.
If you are having an issue in a specific area, let me know!
I'll reiterate that you're drawing borders, so correct answers are things like "USA Lake Superior" or "Canada St. Lawrence Channel" and so forth.
Enter answers in the format "country country", "country sea", "country lake", etc.
Otherwise I love this quiz! So tricky for me, my best is 676 using the full time, but I'm getting there.
naming the land borders is one thing, knowing all the obscure lakes, gulfs, bays and seas to complete the quiz is next level.
Wiki link to main island of Svalbard including the map: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spitsbergen
Will you be adding the newly established Denmark/ Canada border in the next update?
Thank you :)
