What are the type-ins for Sherburne? Because I definitely didn’t type that.

Nantucket, MA was historically known as Sherburne. It retained this name until 1795.

1795 is when that man arrived and they renamed the island to make the limerick work.

Brooklyn wasn't really among the larger settlements yet. According to the federal census of 1790: 1,603 inhabitants.

I'm not sure where the 4,549 figure came from, but it might be from the local precinct.

I never realized that Connecticut was so packed with most of the giant metropolises (pop 4,000+) of colonial times. I would have guessed 3 other states ahead of Conn.

Highly urbanized for the time, along with Massachusetts. It was actually Virginia that was the most populous state at the time with around 500,000 people, though not as urbanized as the New England colonies.

No Springfield, Columbus, or Columbia? Preposterous.

I don't know this for a fact, but it would not surprise me if these names became more popular after independence. It makes sense that a newly independent American nation would want to name things after Columbus in order to emphasize their distance from Europe and the Old World (somewhat ironic, given that Columbus was himself a European).

Springfield, MA was still at a relatively small population of about 1,974 by 1776. As far as I'm aware, there was no town under the name of Columbia or Columbus that had over 1,000 inhabitants at the time.

Being from Connecticut made this a little easier. Only missed Woodbury. I was very surprised Lebanon made the list since it only has a few thousand more people now.

Fell out of significance due to staying a farming town. Lebanon would sit comfortably at about 3,500 - 4,000 inhabitants until it started to decline after the 1790 census. It wouldn't recover this population count until the 1960s/1970s.
