Therefore India definitely deserves the place
However, as mentioned in the source (if you checked it), hollywood-metoo-campaign played a part in the case of US rising surprisingly high. Therefore it's quite safe to say the women's awakening to danger all around them is somewhat distorted. Either way, the American women felt very unsafe this year.
In the case of India, you should know that women easily fall victims of violence, abuse and so. Especially the poor ones, but from all 'casts'. Home isn't exactly a safe haven either. You can check the information from any human rights, women's rights and other NGO sources and they all tell the same story. What makes Indian case worse is that they don't even have a civil war or non-existent government / full blown anarchy like in e.g. Somalia.
Thanks for the comments.
That's tragic. That's all that can be said here.
While I completely agree with you that we would be more than happy to get a better source, I will have to say that don't let your national pride blind you from what's going on. All sources of all kinds tell many negative stories of living in India as a woman. They cannot all be lying, right?
Here are the first two stories, on the subject, I found with a simple online search:
"Around 70% of women in India are victims of violence including; Rape, marital rapes, sexual assault and harassment, cultural and traditional practices, and human trafficking including forced labor, sex slavery and domestic servitude."
"A crime against a woman is committed every three minutes. A woman is raped every 29 minutes, a case of cruelty committed by either the husband or relative of the victim occurs every nine minutes. Around 100 million women and girls are estimated to be victim of human trafficking..."
Sounds pretty bad and it went on like this.
I have no personal say on what's the worst country for a woman. I can say that most of Europe is top notch.
