My teenaged daughter was there during the "political crisis" of 2000. She had planned a week layover there on her way to study abroad in Australia and was upset that they weren't allowed out of the airport. She described it as a skirmish at the other end of the island and saw no reason why she couldn't go to her hotel. (Her mother, on the other hand, was very thankful that she was put on the next flight out, especially after I learned that "the other end of the island" was less than a three hour drive away.)
