Had one attempt for the fun of it....thought I didn't know that much (do know some basics 'cause i studied history). Apparently also some good guesses. Got a 100% at first attempt. Fully surprised myself. xD

With the exception of "Gained independence first" if it has negative connotations choose Haiti. Poorer, dictators, earthquakes, smaller, voodoo...

'smaller' and 'having multiple languages' are not negative. New Zealand is smaller than Australia, and has multiple languages, and we take pride in both of these things.

You take pride in being small? OK

There's nothing wrong with being small, especially not "smaller than Australia", which is a pretty common thing to be among countries!

how is voodoo something negative?

Voodoo doesn't exactly have the greatest reputation. It's perceived as something a bit more barbaric, like witchcraft or black magic.

Voodoo is a complex religion with deep spiritual practices. The Hollywood version (which was popularised during a time of deep anti-black racism) is not the truth.

If you take the time to learn about the reality of it, voodoo is fascinating.

Vodou's negative reputation can almost entirely be blamed on the overall Western bias against indigenous religions. It being a closed practice just adds to the "people fear what they don't understand" aspect of it.

I found these questions pretty easy and not too interesting. Maybe try to put more challenging questions that don't seem too obvious. If you agree, try adrmcm's quiz series which is very similar to this one, though he started his idea first. Overall, good idea, though changes MUST be made :)

Not sure why it's "easy". I only missed 2, but I mostly guessed. What's easy for you isn't easy for other people.

I'm not sure who the 'we' is, but it's spelled in many ways, reflecting the challenges of transliteration and word-borrowing between languages.

Voodoo is an incorrect, Western bastardization of the word. Vodou is the appropriate spelling

It's crazy how two places so demographically similar like Haiti/DR, North/South Korea and Israel/Palestine are so different.

Humans are weird.

Correction: the DR was also a French colony for a number of years. Spain ceded the colony (then known as Santo Domingo) to France in 1795. Toussaint Louverture took effective control in France's name in 1801. The last French troops left in 1809.

Fun quiz otherwise!

Suggestions for additional questions:

- first to be visited by Christopher Columbus (that's Haiti)

- country that invaded its neighbor in 1822 (that's Haiti)

- site of a mausoleum supposedly holding the remains of C. Columbus (that's the DR)

- birthplace of bird painter John James Audubon (that's Haiti)
