No question about the country/state? Also I presume it's only US Americans that consider it the LA capital ...

Capital of the Bermuda Triangle? Yeah, maybe...

Some US Americans, maybe. I've never heard it referred to as such, personally. I've never been to the area, though.

It’s called the capital of Latin America by Latinos. We are known as a safe haven for Latinos who escaped from bad situations in their own country. There is also NYC, but Miami is closer. We have a bunch (and I mean A BUNCH) of Cubans, but we also have Brazilians, Spaniards, Mexicans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Venezuelans, Hondurans, Salvadorians, Haitians (thanks to France they are technically Latino), and Argentinians. For example, I’m part Brazilian, Cuban, and Spanish. We don’t care about ethnicities. In fact, some of us don’t care if you were an illegal immigrants.

As a latinamerican, I have never heard or read anyone, anywhere, in any country, call Miami the capital of Latin America. Yet another example of appropiation by the US, what a surprise. >__>

Google "capital of Latin America" and Miami is overwhelmingly the result with articles not just from the US but from the BBC and others with the nickname reaching back more than 30 years. At this point, it's not just some "appropriation," and even it is, it's been a pretty damn successful one.

Successful or not, it doesn't make sense to me. Even the first article in Google search begins "With the largest Latin American population outside of Latin America..."

Most of those Google results are from english speaking sites. Not a good counterargument to the "appropiation" argument when most of your references are from the appropiators. And even then, in Google's second page there's one mention of Mexico and another of Los Angeles. Also from anglo websites.

Now, if you search for "capital de Latinoamerica", the results change dramatically. Barely one mention of LA, with another one of Buenos Aires (but only as cultural capital), and that's it. Ergo, this would indicate that latinamericans don't consider Miami the "capital of Latin America", only (or mostly) the anglos do. In other words, appropiation.

Dexter is a better show than Miami Vice.

And I'd like to mention a movie set in Miami that was better than Bad Boys but right now I can only think of 2 Fast 2 Furious and that might actually be worse.

Thought of one. Two actually. Ace Ventura and Wild Things.
Level 73

+1 for Ace Ventura! And +.5 for Dexter. It was one of my favorites at first, but the last few seasons turned really bad...
Level 83
Jul 25, 2020
I only thought season 8 was bad, and I didn't even mind the ending as much as most people did.
Level 74

I hear there is a new series of Dexter planned as the ending received so many complaints...

As a show it surpasses Miami Vice by some distance.

The best movie set in Miami (by a fairly wide margin) is Moonlight.

Though, I hate the weather, I love the fact I was born in Miami. I love the culture here. I might be biased but I don’t care.
