Arrrrrgh, I missed Madagascar because I assumed we were being asked for an island that belonged to Mozambique. Guess I should have listened to my Grade 1 teacher: Read The Question Before You Answer It!!!!!!
There is a clear split in the answer statistics separating the bottom 3; it appears that there are two types of Jetpunk user, those who know quite a lot about Mozambique and those who know everything about Mozambique!
The top-7 answers are for questions about Mozambique's neighbors.Capital and language tend to be top answers in almost every country quiz. The initial letter help does help.
However, I'm actually surprised that the Black Panther is (as of May 18th) the bottom answer... After all, before Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo came, he was Portugal's historic top-player.
vermiciousknid I was exactly the same. Anyone who's read Kipling's Just So stories is unlikely to forget the great grey-green greasy Limpopo River, all set about with Fever trees.
@angroper14 - Well, it didn't exactly specify "historic" footballer, so most people will probably think it's about a current player they've never heard of. At least I made that mistake, until I noticed the initial and then tried the only Portugal-related player with E I've ever heard of, just for fun. Never knew he was originally from Mozambique, either.
Great quiz. It had me scratching my head, even though I come from Zimbabwe...for example, I never knew that they eat Cassava and not Corn like their neighbours.
Guessed my way (thanks to the clues) to 100% on my one and only attempt.
Eusebio played for Benfica in the 1968 European Cup Final versus Manchester United. He was a great player and a great sportsman. In the 89th minute of normal time, with the score standing at 1-1, Eusebio was through on goal with a great chance to score, but the keeper made an excellent save. He could have won the match with that shot. He waited for the keeper to distribute the ball, and stayed to give him a personal applause. The keeper was called Alex Stepney. United went on to win in extra time, scoring three more goals, making them the first English team to win the European Cup. See here.
The discoverer of the metallic element first named it Alumium. He later used Aluminum but this name did not much use as his peers adopted Aluminium which was preferred by the scientific community (including the Americas) throughout the early 1800s. Noah Webster " is to blame for Americans choosing not the first spelling nor the last and widely accepted spelling, but the interim spelling in the 1860s. A truly American decision if ever there was one, on a par with using imperial measurements in spite of the rest of the world.
The island one is a bit of a stretch, but every country quiz has "countries that border it" questions. It's not like QM is going out of his way to include other countries.
