Actually, it should be Nieuw Amsterdam... English language quiz or not! Paramaribo and Suriname and Amsterdam are in their original language, so why not Nieuw Amsterdam?

Because easily translatable words from worldwide known places are never kept in the original language: East Timor (and not Timor Leste), Saint Petersburg (and not Sankt Peterburg) or North Macedonia (and not Severna Makedonija)

Timor-Leste, Côte d'Ivoire and Cabo Verde are all accepted, but are also commonly used in English. Nieuw Amsterdam, Severna Makedonija and, to a lesser extent, Sankt Petersburg, are used less in English in favor of New Amsterdam (when talking about the Dutch settlement), North Macedonia and St. Petersburg.

French Guinea is now known as Guinea in English (Guinée in French) and is in Africa. French GUYANA, on the other hand, is in South America. Suriname was also called Dutch Guiana.

You know what's sad? When you manage to get every clue right on a country quiz EXCEPT the one that's literally just the name of the country.

That's why you should always try typing the country name first.

I finally, finally remembered to do that this time around, and what's more, once "Amazon" didn't work for the river question, I knew where it was going, and I was all "Oh...I got you this time, quiz."

Kinda embarrassing how I got the export question wrong, given that I'm from Suriname. I always thought that bauxite/aluminum was main export product,.

The trade definitely worked out in the Dutch's favor...
