Only because I grew up in Mass was I able to guess the grey matter on branches in only a second or two. Our high school played theirs in sports. Otherwise, pretty much of a breeze as any of these city quizzes would be for long time residents of that particular state, but I enjoyed it very much reminiscing about the old days.
It's interesting to note that, according to Wikipedia, the current fad is that it is no longer considered appropriate to refer to the Deerfield raid as a "massacre". 41 colonists were killed in the initial raid, 25 of whom were children. Of the 109 captives, 20 died on the trek to Canada; infants and children "fared the worst" with a woman too weak to keep up because of having given birth being among the first to be murdered.
But thank goodness it is no longer considered a massacre. Again, according to Wiki, "Canadians view the raid not as a massacre and mass abduction but as a successful local application of guerilla techniques in the broader context of international war" and "Moving towards a more inclusive Historic Deerfield's yearly reenactment and educational programs treat "massacre" as a "dirty word" and stress Deerfield as a place to study cultural interaction and difference at society's borders".
I think I will become more progressive also and reconsider my impressions of the Washita Creek "incident" in Oklahoma and the Sand Creek "disturbance" in Colorado and the unfortunate Wounded Knee " cultural interaction". They weren't massacres, but successful local applications of guerilla techniques at society's borders, in deference to the sensibilities of the descendants of the participating soldiers. I feel so much better already.
Yes for Brockton, City of Champions. I knew the ditty as ending You Won't Come Out the Way You Went In. Tough to guess between Lowell, Lawrence, and Fall River as top textile center. Mayflower landed at both Provincetown and Plymouth. Hampshire College is back from the dead so Amherst is a good answer; Boston and Worcester have more than two other colleges while Lowell and Dartmouth have fewer; however, with the metastasis of the public university system, Newton is arguably also correct.
Holyoke - birthplace of volleyball
Northampton - home to Smith College
Deerfield - Razed during Queen Anne's War
