Great quiz, it stretches us out of our usual batch of most famous cities. Frustrated that I couldn't remember Mostar, despite having visited it !!! How about doing the same quiz for the other continents? (Antarctica might be a bit of a struggle)

yea excellent idea, for most countries we only know the capital and/or the biggest city. (In some cases still neither, working on it..)

That was blinking tricky. Even looking at the answers there are a few countries where I just knew the capital. Great idea though.

Tough! There were 2 more I could ve gotten (denmark and ukraine), but bottom 11 in stats I would have next to no chance. (novi sad maybe, I answered that on other quizzes) and I missed greece too, I allready typed thessalo.. but didnt know how the rest goes haha, so erased it again and moved on.

I did have belarus though, by typing brest, no idea where that came from, I typed it pretty early. I think it was my first random guess. First did a few by going down the list, but then thought it might be faster to throw some names out there. Then after naming a few I looked at the list again.

Ok, then, not that it matters but I give 1 star to this quiz, as I do with any quiz that contains an obvious error.
+10
Level 61
Mar 15, 2020
The quiz maker should actually count Novosibirsk because it's about the five largest cities in the country, and not the five largest cities in the European part. Sure, this is for the European countries, but Novosibirsk is in Russia and Russia is part of the European countries, so I really don't see any problem or "obvious error", other than your being sour after taking the quiz.

1 star? Why?

I just saw the link on the new quiz and now I remember this one. Well, maybe I've been a bit cutting back then and I'm sorry for that, but the HinesBrothers' laconic response still seems especially haughty and stubborn to me. Why can't people just question themselves, or at least give you a proper explanation of their choice? So I expect nothing for the exact same remark that I made on the new quiz today...

Volcanicdevil: In my opinion, if it is about Europe, only European cities should be considered. And don't be ridiculous, everybody can answer St Petersburg and get that one, so no reason for being "sour" about that.

Pandora49: As I said, it doesn't matter. Those stars are symbolic. It was probably mean from me to say I would give 1 star, but it reflects my opinion, and my idea of excellency. If everybody was a bit more critical about the quizzes' design and about mistakes, the makers would have to question themselves and improve their work.

+1
Level 75

Maybe we were laconic, sorry about that. We decided to use the whole of Russia because it seems that more people would assume that to be the case and fewer would complain about Novosibirsk, etc. not being accepted.

It does seem strange to include cities that are not in Europe in this quiz. Not a big deal unless you're looking for perfection - I typed St Petersburg like - I would imagine - 99% of people did anyway.

Very nice quiz, 4.95 stars from me :p

+1
Level 76
Mar 14, 2020
You're right - it's not. Cities in the Republic of Ireland are Dublin, Cork, Galway, Waterford and Limerick. Kilkenny is still referred to as a city because of the royal charter granted by King John in the 13th century (it doesn't actually fulfil the requirements for city status nowadays but is regarded as such because of tradition). Drogheda is still a town although it has been pushing for city status since 2016. Dundalk has designated city status but isn't there yet.
+1
Level 45
Apr 14, 2020
granuaile is completly correct above, I live in Dundalk and neither here nor Drogheda have city status though both towns have been pushing hard.

Kilkenny is generally accepted as a city when it comes to quizzing.

I would accept the quizmasters decision on Kilkenny but Drogheda should not be a correct answer here.

Class challenging quiz by the way, I have some substantial gaps in my knowledge to fill it seems :)

This football club is quirky. As Tiraspol is in Transnistria, it might be the closest city to provide a genuine Stalinian feel.

And Sheriff is the Walmart of Transnistria, in USA, the club would be something like the Walmart Kalamazoo.

The Polish is very hard, i know: ''Chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie w Szczebrzeszynie, a Szczebrzeszyn z tego słynie''. On keyboard there are: ę - e + Alt, ó - o + Alt, ą - a + Alt, ś - s + Alt, ł - l + Alt, ż - z + Alt, and ń - n + Alt. There's: Krakow - Krak(o + Alt)w, Lodz - L(o + Alt)d(x + Alt) Poznan - Pozna(n + Alt) etc.

There should be a version where you can name any place (village township etc) no matter the population but the biggest city and capital are banned.
