I find it interesting that this quiz isn't listed under the "name a valid word" series (perhaps because it's not by Quizmaster). I like these, and would be happy to see more of them.

Suggestion: the second last question would be improved by asking for 5 letter words that start with DW (and drop the trailing 's' from each answer).

Yes ... please make it clear that "Macbeth" cannot be accepted for the Shakespeare title with an "M" word in it ...perhaps it should read "M"-word that is NOT a proper noun" ?

And when I read the clue about "Spanish loan word",

I immediately tried to think of any word related to getting a financial loan ... not Spanish words used in the English language.

So could there perhaps be a more clear way of wording this question/clue ? Thanks

The description clearly states that only Scrabble words are accepted. Macbeth being a proper noun is not the reason that it is left out. It is left out because it is not an official Scrabble word. Also, I believe the definition of "loan word" is fairly wide-spread. I don't think we need a long-winded description to accommodate the 5% who don't know what it means and can't figure it out.

That was unnecessarily snarky regarding your use of the phrase, "Spanish loan word." The correct term is actually spelled "loanword" and not "loan word." It would have helped if you had spelled the term correctly, which would have made it much less likely someone would think the clue meant something finance-related. Should either be corrected or, better yet, rephrase the clue to avoid confusion. But getting snarky when you didn't even spell the term correctly really wasn't necessary.

Not valid either. While it appears MID would be 1499, 1499 is actually MCDXCIX. MID would be more concise, but Romans didn't think that would be best unfortunately.

dim as a valid roman numeral word?
+2

Jun 11, 2022
No. This has been suggested.

D = 500, I = 1, M = 1000.

500 + (1000 - 1) = 1499

However, as said above, 1499 would be MCDXCIX. If anything, it would be MID, not DIM.

Javelina needs to be added for Spanish loan word. This term is used is Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas and possibly more to refer to wild pigs. This is used much more widely than peccary. I have lived here my entire life and have not once heard anyone say peccary but have known what a javelina was since I was little

Jun 13, 2024
500+(500-1) ? That could be interpreted as 999, but that's not how the Romans constructed numbers. They would have used 1000 (M) instead of two 500s (D) and built off of that. So, 999 would be CMXCIX: (1000-100)+(100-10)+(10-1).
