Well, it depends how big your country is and how easy it is to get out. There's an awful lot to see in some quite small countries. Even the variety just in Luxemburg I find quite amazing.

Great idea, though I disagree layovers should count. But since they do I also added North Korea because I crossed over to the North Korean side of the conference room at Panmunjom. If I discount that, plus a layover in Brunei, the most uncommon country I've actually visited is Mongolia.

In some cases layovers and other brief visits make perfect sense. For example, close to no one stays overnight in places like Monaco or Vatican and if you spend a few hours between flights exploring a city, you may well get the full picture of the place. Talking about smaller cities there, of course, and then again, you can spend a lifetime in some bigger cities and still know close to nothing of the place.

I interpreted "layover" to mean that you didn't leave the airport. I've technically spent longer in Brunei (a hellish 12-hour layover) than I have in Andorra, the Vatican or even Singapore, but I'd never say that I've "been to Brunei." Airports are a Gibsonian nowhereville. But yeah, if you leave the airport and wander around the city for a few hours, I think that counts as having been to a country.

Interesting. I've only really been to 4 countries, but one of them is Bangladesh which is pretty low.

Why no Bhutan though? I get that North Korea and Nauru are both pretty hard to visit, but Bhutan gets quite a few tourists, especially from India and other Asian countries. You never know, it's possible someone on this site has been there.

1. The US Government literally warns you not to go there

2. North Korea probably censors jetpunk or anything they dont trust so there are likely no users who play this quiz in North Korea

I went through the north-east corner of Belarus (3%) in 1991 on a night train from Moscow to Vilnius but I didn't count it. Most common that I have yet to be is Switzerland, but I have gone around it. Was planning to go Ireland in 2020.......

I did not count Canada or El Salvador. As for Canada, I only went to the border checkpoint (Canada side) and back, and El Salvador was airplane layover for the 2 times I went to Peru.

In addition, I've been to St. Martin/Sint Maarten, Grand Cayman, and US Virgin Islands. As for my home country, I've currently been to 30 states, so at least I travel within this large country.
