Thanks. and I'm sure many would agree, but I intentionally keep the time limits tight on these fill-in-the-country quizzes because otherwise I feel like they just become a smaller and more random variant of the most popular quiz on this site (the countries of the world quiz). Once you've mastered the countries of the world quiz, then you can get 100% on any other countries quiz given sufficient time just by typing in names of countries at random. I would rather that the results reflect the answers people got because they actually knew them to be true- not the ones they got because they had 3 minutes left on the timer and were randomly typing in names of countries. If someone wants to have more time they can always turn off the timer at the top. But if enough other people request more time I'll change it.

The Countries of the World quiz gives 15 minutes for almost 200 countries. There are 51 countries on this quiz, about 1/4. So... it's kind of like you get 15 seconds for free if you look at it that way. ;-)

Whoops! My mistake... actually you only get 12 minutes for the countries of the world quiz, not 15. So.. it's actually like you are getting a full minute for free here, relatively speaking.

I've taken this quiz myself at least 4 or 5 times and thought sometimes I get all of them I also sometimes miss 1-3, which is kind of what I was shooting for. If you get 40 or so I'd say you are doing very well and the ones remaining are just the ones that did not occur to you immediately. These are the results I'm more interested in seeing. I hope the time limit isn't too frustrating. As mentioned, you can always turn it off. I still think it's better this way. But thank you (sincerely, I love feedback) for the input.

It's funny that you say what you say, because I think that b/c there is so little time, then this DOES become like the countries of the world quiz, with folks just hammering out on the keyboard, instead of thoughtfully choosing good answers. How else would 23% have picked Guyana? I always think there should be more time on your quizzes, but especially on this one. When time ran out and I only had 24, i was really shocked, and disappointed. I guess I should just turn the timer off, but it feels like I'm cheating and there's no joy in that.

hm... but if you are just randomly typing countries then you will not be able to get all the right answers. I can easily get 100% on this quiz because I think about what I'm typing. But if I wasted time typing in every country in Africa, Asia and Oceania then there's no way I could finish. Guyana- I suppose people guess it either because there are a quarter million people from Guyana living in the USA and they're bound to know some other people taking this quiz, or because quiz takers were guessing every country in South and Central America which is a pretty good strategy to take.

Why would I add Ireland? It's not a correct answer. The last time there was a significant amount of Irish immigration to the United States was during the 1920s (and earlier). Those people are, by and large, currently deceased.

Though that said there was a big jump in the last couple decades. Maybe Ireland will crack the top 50 again after the 2020 census.

most interesting thing to me from the results is how few people guess the Philippines. There are Filipinos everywhere around the world. Not just in the United States, but they definitely have a big presence there. That country's biggest export by far has to be people. I work all over the world and there are always Filipinos working alongside me wherever I go.

if they had brought their cuisine with them, and opened up filipino restaurants, they would wield a bigger cultural stick, so to speak.

That's a good plan except that Filipino food is terrible. Nobody would eat there except maybe other Filipinos.

Many of them did, enough to elect the first Muslim congressman, though there are quite a few Somalis around the Washington, DC area, as well.

I couldn't find the data I used to make this quiz but it was from the 2010 census. Whatever the number was for Portuguese immigrants it was smaller than 78,000. Keep in mind this only counts people living in the United States who were born somewhere else. If you counted up all Americans who claim Portuguese ancestry then I think the total number is between one and two million people, but the overwhelming majority of those people were not born in Portugal. The two principal waves of Portuguese immigration to the USA were in the late 19th Century and the mid 20th Century. Most of the people who came in those waves, especially the first, are dead now. They are survived by their descendants, but those descendants are not considered immigrants.

Are you talking about the total number of Americans who can claim British or Irish ancestry? Yeah... the number would be in the tens of millions if not hundreds of millions. But notice that Ireland doesn't even make the top 51 anymore because the waves of Irish immigration came a long time ago.

If this was about ancestry and not just where you were born, then obviously Ireland would show up, too. Irish is the 2nd most-commonly cited ancestry in the US after German, but they don't even make the top 51 when it comes to recent immigrants.

The only one of those four I find modestly surprising is Iraq. Never met that many Iraqis living in the US before.

I grew up in Centreville, VA which has become one of the biggest "K-towns" in the USA, and used to work at an industrial laundry where about half of the employees were from Ghana, it would have been difficult for me to have missed either.
