Some people obviously typed in Bill and got Bill Clinton... but the fact that he is listed as William IV wasn't enough to tip them off that there were other Williams on the list... :) and the same thing happened when they typed in Jimmy and the answer came up James VI. lol
You are right, i was focused on typing and thinking and didnt want to waste time scrolling up and down the list. Actually you are nót right, obviously seeing william ıv reminded me of others williams but the v actually made me think other were automatically filled in, which usually is the case. Big chance that was the case for most people
edit: actually the georges and johns wére all filled in at once, that was probably why i didnt check if all williams were there, would ve made sense if they showed up too
I've since changed the quiz to accept these common nicknames as type-ins for all presidents that share the same legal first name. So... typing in "Jimmy" for Jimmy Carter will also get you points for James Buchanan. Not sure if this is better or not, but it should eliminate these mistakes.
i got all of them but maybe you should accept other spelling for some. like i kept typing in Lynden instead of Lyndon and Rutheford instead of Rutherford.
Or if you pronounce it in a non-rhotic accent. As an Australian who has a non-rhotic accent the second and third r's in Rutherford would not be pronouns. Though AndysTesting's comment can be mistaken out of context to mean the first r in Rutherford is silent which is not the case in any accents and you are simply making a joke about that.
Whoops that was meant to be pronounced, thanks for pointing that out kitsims.
As for your statement martay, I find it very offensive as an Australian. And by that I mean I find it very offensive how much I agree with it. We have butchered the English language.
I'm glad everyone enjoyed the quiz. QM tells me that my Presidential Middle Names Quiz is going to be featured soon, as well. If you want to take a crack at it before everyone else does you can click on the above link.

I don't even come close to relessness. That guy has got some serious quiz diarrhea. But I probably comment more than he does. He's too busy making quizzes to say more, I think.
Nope. Bill Clinton's actual given name is William. Bill is a nickname. Harry Truman's actual given name is Harry. He was named after his uncle Harrison "Harry" Young. Nobody ever called him Harold.
Pedant's corner. You're insistent on Stephen for Grover Cleveland and Thomas for Woodrow Wilson, but apparently didn't know that Dwight David Eisenhower was christened David Dwight! Cool quiz.
I'm not insisting on anything, I'm just going by what their official names are. Eisenhower's was changed shortly after he was born, according to Wikipedia. Why would I use the name that he had for the first few days of his life?
To come back to this a long time later, of course I didn't intend to sound as rude as I did, and I didn't really mean anything bad by saying "insist". I just got 5/5 points with fewer than half the names on the board! Love this quiz.
I'm not the best at this so I'm being honest. I only got 27/44, so I guess I need to practice. kalbahamut, you are becoming one of my favorite quiz makers, with all of the fantastic quizzes. You are the next Quizmaster.
Im suprized Calvin Coolidge is name is John and did you know that Richard Nixon stole paper from somebody's poticial party that was the end of nixon's presidency and jimmy Carter's real name is James
In the spirit of Easter, would you be willing to forgive and forget past squabbles? I apologize for any wrongdoing on my part. I hope we can reconcile.
"Let's see here, common English names, common English names, hmm... John, James, Andrew, William, George. Hey, that's 20/44 already!" Apart from some of the most well-known presidents, that was me.
I tried steven which didnt get me anything. I thought steven was the american way to write it and stephen the british way. (So i didnt try the other version, i would ve tried both if i typed stephen first, because then i would ve been reminded ow yea, need the us spelling.)
I don't there is a standard "American" spelling for Stephen/Steven. I have several friends by that name and about half spell it one way and half the other.
I typed in all the uncommon names first (Warren, Chester, Franklin, etc) and was trying to remember Wilson's real first name, when the time ran out with fewer than half the names on the board... I still got 5 points out of 5!
I think you must have taken the quiz before and gotten a higher score. The average is 34/44 so I don't think it's possible that 22/44 would get you 5 points.
Oh, I didn't know the 5 out of 5 could be based on a different time. In fact I thought it told you what you scored but if you've already done the quiz it doesn't actually add it to your total.
Woodrow Wilson is a nice alliteration, but I have no idea why he is put William same thing with Calvin Coolidge he has a name with James is it? Or is somebody else. Maybe somebody should do president nicknames I would nail that and somebody should do what their parents are named.
Georges H. W. and W. Bush were Republicans. Gerald Ford was a Republican. Dwight Eisenhower was a Republican. Donald Trump is the Tea Party's dream. He is not a Republican.
I don't think he's even what anyone in the tea party movement wanted. (they might think he is, but he's not. All of his supporters have been duped) Trump is just a self-serving narcissistic moron who was born rich and has conned and swindled his way into the presidency. What was the tea party about? Mostly smaller government, right? But Trump has increased the deficit and his tax cuts for the wealthy is going to explode the debt like it never has been before. He doesn't mean anything he says he only cares somewhat about appearances. He's not serving the party. He's not serving the alt Right. He's not a true conservative. He's not a true Republican. He's not a true American. He's just a disgrace.
It is interesting, though, that his name, Leslie Lynch King Jr., wasn't changed until he became an adult and he took his stepfather's name (changing the spelling of the middle name) even though he was never adopted by him. But legally his name was Gerald when he was president, and that's what the quiz is about.
How would a nickname be MORE acceptable than the name that was given to someone at his birth...
Gerald should definitely be the displayed name, as that was his name during his function. But I dont see it as a problem to accept the name he was given and didnt change untill later in life.
Great idea! It's funny how our brain works... I just aced the US presidents quiz to get the badge, but only got 34/45 on the first names. Some of the names I felt like I had never even seen before, though I obviously have seen them plenty of times trying to ace the last names.
I think I missed Benjamin Harrison because when I do the "name all the us presidents" quiz I type in harrison for William Henry Harrison and don't need to think about Benjamin Harrison because I get him for free
I didn't know this was going to be on the front page again today. I intend to change the type-ins to be mostly consistent with all presidents that share a common name but have different nicknames to avoid the phenomenon of people getting "Bill" but missing "William," et cetera.
But I think I will hold off on that until next year. When, hopefully I'll get to add Michael and then shortly after perhaps an Elizabeth, Bernard, or Joseph.
I like this site, too. I've been coming here pretty much every day since 2012 and comment on quizzes when I want to show appreciation to the quiz author or maybe try to start a conversation. That's why you see my comments everywhere.
I used to author quizzes a lot when I was working at a university in Saudi Arabia and forced to maintain office hours where I often had nothing else to do. I left that job in September 2014. So since then... a combination of having less restrictions on my free time lately, and just getting tired of it I guess. I have a lot of quiz ideas I just never got around to making.
I am not a Democrat. My strong opposition to Donald Trump's presidency was based on my status as a human being. And any policy opinions I have are derived from a commitment to rational skepticism not any particular ideological or political bent. If I had one of those it would probably be best described as classical liberalism with a dash of libertarianism and a sprinkling of neo-liberalism. Some would call me a centrist. I prefer the label realist or rationalist as not all issues are binary and, for those that are binary, typically one side is more correct than the other (not always the same side), and compromise is not the ideal answer. I prefer taking the position that is correct over taking the position that is in the center. I've never belonged to a political party.
I memorized the presidents when I was a little kid. So this was fairly easy for me. Got them all in a little over two minutes. Good quiz though! Keep 'em coming
The only way I remembered Rutherford or Millard was because I saw their first names and thought how different names are from their time like, could you imagine talking to your friend and saying hey Millard, pass me the controller, or hey whats up Rutherford.
Rip I couldn't even spell Obama's first name. I seemed to have tried everything but barack (just now mispelled so scrolled up to check again to fix it).
I also typed Rotherford a bunch.
I shouldn't have missed Harry, Lyndon or Grover. Some of the most famous first names of them all.
edit: actually the georges and johns wére all filled in at once, that was probably why i didnt check if all williams were there, would ve made sense if they showed up too

to be perfectly honest, I actually was not surprised that Warren G Harding, Rutherford B Hayes and Millard Fillmore were on the bottom of the list.
Long time no talk.

Congratulations to all Democrats by the way, including Kal and any others on this quiz
Hopefully, he turns out to be a good President who we all support and are proud of.
A pointless, unnoticed political protest?
