But why not include towns in the title? JetPunk never learns!

The boundary between a city and a town is rather vague, and since you can pretty much get what the quiz is about, I see no point in your argument.

More like commenters like you never seem to learn when nitpicking isn't a necessity.

@lluvbread123: This is exactly the point. In many countries the distinction between a town and a city is not a clear one, or an important one. In the UK, it's 100% clear: a town has either been awarded city status or it hasn't. There is absolutely zero room for doubt. The distinction is deeply rooted in the culture, going back millennia - and as a result (though I quite understand this may seem ridiculous) people care very much about it. There are decades-long campaigns for city status (e.g. Southend); on the other hand, some towns (e.g. Cheltenham) are proud of remaining so and fiercely resist the prospect of city status which they fear would ruin their character.

@Dekkie: See above. In many countries, this would be a nitpicky / overly pedantic point (although there's a case that on a site like JetPunk, that shouldn't necessarily rule it out). But in the UK, and to the people of the UK (and yes, you may consider this absurd), it isn't.

Some of these seem a bit spurious. Looking up Littlehampton - pop <28k, Filton <11k

Obviously different info sources differ vastly which makes it difficult.

I like the idea though - thanks

And Ewell which is a small village instead of the larger town of Epsom next to it. Neither has more than 50,000 (they are part of the same administrative area.

Really feel like people living in the south-east have the upper hand here, and people living in rural Yorkshire... really don't. Hehe I need to learn my British geography

Good idea for a quiz and well done for doing it but it seems an inconsistent selection of places which make it quite hard to guess many of them, even if you come from the UK. As an example, Filton is really now just a suburb of Bristol (and a distinct parish with a population of 11,285 in 2020). I'm actually doing this quiz from Filton right now so am familiar with its geography. The 71,621 figure quoted includes other suburbs of Bristol.

Similarly, Lowestoft is included with the population for its 'Urban Area' of 73,976 (though the town of Lowestoft is listed as 48.974 in the source). However nearby Great Yarmouth (Urban Area 65,978) is not listed.

It may be better to do what has been done for London on this map and include the suburbs within the population figure of the urban area of a town/city (e.g. Filton as part of Bristol). I'm sure this will remove many inconsistencies.

Very good. Thanks for all your efforts. Nominated. Very minor quibble: suggest Clacton is sufficient with the on sea bit. Thanks again.
