Yeah, that's about where I ground to a halt. I think I got about 250 in the first fifteen minutes, then drastically slowed for the remainder of the time. Learning Thai and Vietnamese provinces would certainly grant a few more. Judging by percentages answered correctly, my specialist area seems to be Malaysian States, but there aren't so many of those as to get a big boost. Indonesia's useful, since so many are in the format [Direction] [Island Name], but there again aren't a huge number.
There are two names for each atoll - a historical one and one that is simplified and is read more or less by going through the alphabet (consonants only) north to south. So, if you wrote "haa," for example (the first letter in the alphabet), you got both North and South Thiladunmathee Atolls - the two most northerly atolls. (Dhivehi is also spelled phonetically, so spellings are variable.)
If you actually memorized these all, presuming the average length to be around even 8 or 9 characters, you only need 25-30wpm to complete this, so it's possible if you have a very, very good memory.
This is one of the most difficult quizzes I have ever taken on JetPunk. I admire your hard work and effort in all of your quizzes. I hope this gets featured.
The Romanised versions are still the official English names though. I don't believe "Taibei" is a type in for Taipei anywhere on Jetpunk at all. Same for Gaoxiong, Taizhong, etc.
Yes, but "Taipei" is similar to Taibei. "Kaohsiung" has no similarity to Gaoxiong and is supremely confusing for a native Chinese. We don't use "Peking" anymore, so why that?
Also, is there a reason this quiz doesn't save? It happens occasionally with other quizzes, but a second run through saves it. This happened with the Europe one too, when I finish it doesn't save, which is really annoying for an hour long quiz.
My brother, wdym. Even Taiwan itself uses those spellings. You won't find a single sign saying Gaoxiong, just because Pinyin isn't the norm here but Zhuyin is. Accepting Pinyin for Taiwanese units would not make any sense because it's neither the "Actual spelling" (Which would just be 高雄), nor the internationalized spelling Taiwan uses itself.
That's like wanting to accept Dongjing for Tokyo just because it's what you're used to lol
We don't use Peking because the PRC doesn't use it. We use Taipei because the ROC uses it. To be honest, I think those typeins should be accepted, but that's the basic reasoning.
Epic quiz, really pushed me. Inevitably on a quiz of this scale there are a few you kick yourself for missing (Istanbul), a few you thought you'd typed in, but hadn't (Kandahar), and a lot you get while typing in something else (surely the incredibly high percentage for Myanmar's Shan State is a result of people trying to type Shanghai?). I think if I did individual country quizzes and added the scores together I'd do better (there's a chance I'd think of Deir-ez-Zor and Raqqa if doing a Syria quiz, but they didn't cross my overburdened brain doing this monster). All in all though, I applaud the work that went into this.
I was pretty happy with the 100 I got, all guesses haha, I tried capitals and the few big cities I knew (which are hardly any and I forgot many capitals...) the cardinal direction and I think I got a few lucky typo hits.
Referring to the West Bank as 'Judea and Samaria' is... questionable. That's a term almost exclusively used in internal Israeli discourse, usually by supporters of complete annexation of the territory. The international community, rightfully, refers to is as the 'West Bank', a more religiously- and politically-neutral term.
Always interesting on these huge ones to see which the least guessed one is which you do manage to get. Mine's Ninh Binh, 3%, little place south of Hanoi where I spent a few days on a motorbike trip. "Ha Long Bay in the rice paddies."
Agreed. Mine is "SOCCSKSARGEN" at 3%, although I actually typed in the old name. Lucky for me it was accepted, I would not have gotten the official name.
Mine is Igdir at 8%. I got like 30 Turkish provinces. I banged my head against the wall when I realized that I forgot ANKARA. Satisfied with 300 though.
I ended up with 216 including most of the ones in Saudi Arabia and all in Israel. Good for 4 points. Good enough for me. Most obscure pick-ups at 3% each currently were Cagayan in the Philippines and Adjara in Georgia, plus a couple I must have got by accident... a little surprised that both of those weren't higher especially Adjara as it's a semi-autonomous region.
Got 187. Not that bad. Couldn't go further I think. Got all from Cyprus, Singapore and, of course, Russia. Just missed 2 from Kazakhstan. And only 2% got Jizzakh, Namangan, Andijan and Jambyl. That was a great trip through Central Asia :)
Can you accept Balochistan for Sistan Va Balochistan in Iran as well? Also, in India, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu are now one union territory.
Minor detail: the location of Pa Laung in Myanmar seems to be incorrect. It should be quite a distance further southwest. The map on wikipedia has this problem too.
An amazing piece of research. Only a couple of minor niggles - it's a bit harsh not to accept 'Nakhichevan' for the Azerbaijan exclave as that was the usual transliteration not that long ago. Also, there are the Governorates of Palestine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governorates_of_Palestine - it's a bit of a shame not to acknowledge the existence of the place.
Okay, this time round I missed Hong Kong. Which is a triple yikes on account of 1) It's probably one of the best known of all of these; 2) It's flag is the image for this quiz; and 3) It's the only one of these I've actually lived in.
Something is up with the corrected guess percentage. How do the regions of North West in Sri Lanka and Singapore have different percentages? And how is Gwangju the most guessed with answers such as Seoul and Tokyo which have 16% and 22%? My correct guesses are also different than what I got last time I played this quiz...
You included Egypt, Akrotiri/Dhekelia, and the Australian territories, and you also removed the African part of Yemen, the European part of Russia, and the Oceanian part of Indonesia. So, why not also remove the European parts of Turkey and Kazakhstan as well as add the British Indian Ocean Territory?
Ive been trying to memorize these subdivisions and eventually the world and im so far at about 790 memorized, well its more than that, but its every country but caucasia area, turkey, syria, lebanon, iraq, jordan and cyprus.
Aint no way someone gets 900 "somehow" without cheating, like you buddy, and even trying to flex that? Unfunny bro. Really unfunny.
This makes me so sad :P
Also why so many easy type-ins for Maldivian atolls? Otherwise great quiz.
And then I woke up.
In real life, I got just under 10%. :-(
Please accept the ACTUAL spelling, not just that Romanized crap. It makes it very confusing.
Also, is there a reason this quiz doesn't save? It happens occasionally with other quizzes, but a second run through saves it. This happened with the Europe one too, when I finish it doesn't save, which is really annoying for an hour long quiz.

Thanks
I thought my pain was over with finishing the US counties quiz, and I find this one...
good job anyways
outstanding quiz - thankyou!

also hi lol
Kazakhstan - Same thing could be said with West Kazakhstan and Atyrau regions.
BIOT - No permanent population.
