Nominated!!! you should add washington dc, it's also a first level subdivision of the US, (and has my utter condolence for not having a proper say in the senate or being allowed to make it's own laws. Pretty sad to treat your national capital like a minor)
It was to keep any state from controlling the capital. At the time, almost nobody lived there, so it wasn't a big issue. Now, though, they need to let D.C. people vote.
By the constitution the government buildings have to be in the district so if they ceded it to Maryland it would be only a few buildings. the problem with that is the 23rd amendment gives the residents of DC 3 electoral college votes. this would mean the president and his family could essentially cast 3 votes for themselves for free. So to have dc as a state or to cede it to another would require the senate to vote on an amendment to revoke the 23rd, then they would have to go through the other long processes for DC to become a state.
Its one of those ones where you can just type in "Couva" and it submits without having to type the rest. Trinidad and Tobago has a few of those: "Couva", "Mayaro" and "Penal"
I'm curious how I got Saint Mary for Jamaica but not for Antigua and Barbuda. I assume there is some type-in that I hit for the Jamaica one that doesn't also trigger the one for Antigua, but it's confusing when looking at the answers list because I assumed I had already typed it in so didn't try it again.
Saint Mary, Jamaica has a slightly different type-in than Saint Mary, A&B because of Jamaican Creole, so you probably typed "San Mary" instead of "Saint Mary".
Knew some. Then got about half just guessing random saints (in English and Spanish) and city names in England and Spain. Catholics not the most original place namers.
I did the same thing, although I missed a few I should have remembered. I probably would never have thought of Eustatius, Cristobal, or Luis Potosi. There's a whole lotta saints out there.
Wouldn't Aruba and Curaçao be considered part of South America like Bonaire? All the ABC islands are on the South American shelf. But then again, for Jetpunk purposes, all the Caribbean islands are North America. In that case, not sure why Bonaire is missing here.
Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius are actually special municipalities in the Netherlands - technically "public bodies" (openbare lichamen, as they say in Dutch). They aren't part of any province, and they're not their own countries. Because the first-level subdivisions of the Netherlands would be constituent countries (Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten) and provinces (things like Zuid-Holland, Groningen, etc.), BES don't count as first-level subdivisions. Confusing but true.
Agreed, but there is territory of the Country of the Netherlands (First subdivision of the Kingdom of the Netherlands) in the region, so Netherlands at least should be an answer on the quiz, highlighting the islands of Bonaire, Saba, and St Eustatius, and maybe accepting those as type-ins.
Someone knows more than me? They must be cheating!
Seriously, since the world subdivisions quiz came out, I've been working my way through the countries learning them. Is it really so far-fetched to think that people on this site would do so?
good job my friend! im done with all the contiguous countries of north america, along with the bahamas and cuba. next step is to tackle the island nations.
Just completed the quiz for the first time a few hours ago and now it’s reset… let me save you time, no Subdivisions of North American countries from the previous version has changed. The 3 additional subdivions in the new version are from South American countries who have island subdivisions in the Caribbean.
Green Turtle Cay isn't highlighting when guessed. I got to typing without looking and sat there for like 5 minutes trying to figure out what I'd missed before scrolling to the answers to see I'd already done it! :)
The least-guessed 31 answers are all at 11% hit rate. I've always wondered what the cheating rate is on JetPunk! There's absolutely no way 11% of people, even in the self-selecting group of people who choose to take this quiz, know every first-level subdivision in the caribbean on their first attempt.
The number is probably pretty high right now because of how many people are retaking the quiz, many of whom already know all or most of them. But the cheating rate definitely is a non-negligable number.
Interestingly, right after the update the mean and the median are extremely far apart - I got a score of 138 which equaled or beat 61% of takers, but the mean number guessed was 152.
Maybe this is just me being lazy but I liked when "St martin" covered both sides of the island. Other than that, I love how much better the updated map looks!
This quiz is fantastic! The one thing I noticed is that when you guess the province of "Panama," it lights up the area where Panama Oeste is, which might make it a bit confusing for new players
"The Netherlands" should be an acceptable answer because the Country of The Netherlands (Saba, St Eustatius, and Bonaire) is a subdivision of The Kingdom of The Netherlands alongside St Maarten, Aruba, and Curacao.
i find it difficult to believe that 12% of people or more can name the first level subdivisions in most central american states without cheating with the aide of a map. the vast majority of people i've met throughout my life couldn't name the fifty states of the US despite a lifetime living here, let alone all of canada. mexicans i've known are good at naming mexican states but not much else. what i'm saying is there is mass cheating on this quiz.
Correction: normal people don’t know this stuff. Let me tell you from firsthand experience that people who do geography quizzes on JetPunk are not people of average knowledge.
Saba and Sint Eustatius being so rarely guessed, is quite surprising
