Massive landslide? Manchin didn't even get 50% of the vote last time he was elected. He's barely holding on. And he took over that seat from Robert Byrd who was famously one of the oldest and longest-serving men in the Senate before he finally died. Apart from 2 years after a special election that seat has been in Democratic hands since the 1930s. The two parties were very, very different back then. That the seat, in the reddest state in the Union, hasn't flipped in all the years since is probably just a testament to how dug-in incumbents can get. But, also, Manchin is pretty much a Democrat in name only. Unless you go back and look at what the party was in the 30s.
Even if he runs in 2024 that seat is all but guaranteed to go Republican. The fact that in 2018 which was a blue wave year he barely hung on against a pretty pathetic challenger is not fortuitous for his re-election prospects.
