New England, Alberta and Minnesota aren't cities. The Whalers played in Hartford when they joined the NHL in 1979. The North Stars played in Minneapolis (Bloomington).

Surely you could accept Hartford, as someone answering that clearly knows that team. It was only known as New England during the WHA days, so both answers should be equally acceptable.
The Whalers may have had the single greatest logo in American sports history, IMO. The blue flukes over the green "W", with the negative space between forming the "H", was both aesthetically excellent and creatively ingenious. I'd put the 80's Milwaukee Brewers glove-and-ball "mb" logo a close second.
I was disappointed when the Cincinnati Stingers weren't included in the WHA/NHL merger/absorption in 1979. I wonder how close they actually were to being included, since at the end, they had Robbie Ftorek, Mike Gartner, Barry Melrose and a young Mark Messier. What could have been....
