By city proper population, yes. By metro area population, Austin is smaller than Atlanta, Boston, Phoenix, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Denver, and Sacramento.

Not really surprising. Austin is a fast growing city. It'll clear the 1 million mark for the 2020 census, I'm sure.
