I have thought for a long time, that Kannada is one of the indigenous languages in Canada. So maybe the origin of the name is the same as it is in case of Indians in America? Columbus gave them the name because he thought he was in India. Or is it just a coincidence? Btw whats Canada called in Kannada? Greetings from Canada.
Canada comes from an indigenous Iroquoian word for village, Kanata. Major Indian languages mostly just code-switch English names for countries nowadays, even though there are some older names. Since Canada is a newer country there isn't really an alternative to borrowing the English name though.
