Very nice quiz! I would maybe shave off some time, I got the airports I knew the code of (30-ish) and still had 5 minutes left, at which point I could just guess random capitals

KBP: Kyiv

KEF: Reykjavik

KIV: Chisinau

LEU: Andorra la Vella

LHR: London

Ah yes, logic 👍🏻

LHR for London Heathrow is fairly logical, but I can't explain the others!

It helps if you happen to know where the airports actually are... Keflavik (near Reykjavik), Borispol (near Kyiv)... and to remember the old name of Podgorica

Chisinau is pronounced (something a bit like) "Kishinov" hence the (former) airport code of KIV.

Actually, that is more akin to the Russian pronunciation of the city, hence why they recently changed the airport's IATA to RMO (Republica Moldova in Romanian). The way the city is pronounced in Romanian is very similar to the English pronunciation. The airport's former IATA, KIV, was still a remnant of the country's Soviet past, which they are trying to distance themselves from.

KEF in Reykjavik is for the nearby Keflavik town apparently, where the airport (I guess) is situated

KBP stands for Kyiv-Boryspil, same story - suburb of Kyiv

LHR - London Heathrow

Some airport codes don't actually coincide with the name of the city. How is Paris CDG? Because the airport is named after Charles de Gaulle

Anyway, whenever I see VNO, I always think about Vnukovo, another Moscow airport instead of Vilnius :)

Chisinau is RMO

Thanks for pointing that out! I created this quiz four years ago, and the code seems to have changed from KIV to RMO in January 2024.

I have updated the quiz, pending approval.

Podgorica used to be called Titograd. Hence Code TGD.

plenty of old names left in airport codes. LED St petersburg/Leningrad, FRU Bishkek/Frunze etc.

Andorra have no airport

Yes this is a marginal one. I included it because its name is Andorra–La Seu d'Urgell Airport and the Wikipedia page for Andorra la Vella says it is served by LEU.

I guess LEU comes from its original name of La Seu d'Urgell Airfield.

Andorra doesn't have its own airport. There is a nearby airport in Spain but if that's included then Rome FCO should be included for Vatican City, Rimini RMI should be included for San Marino, and St Gallen ACH for Lichtenstein.

I took the view that having 'Andorra' in the airport's name was enough to include LEU for Andorra la Vella, but I now see that the same is true of RMI whose full name is 'Rimini and San Marino "Federico Fellini" International Airport'.

I have therefore revised the criteria to be:

- Airport must be in the same country as the capital.

- Wikipedia page for the airport must say it serves the capital.

On this basis I have removed Andorra la Vella.

Thanks! I have also learnt a lot.

I should probably review the other quizzes in the series to bring them up to the same standard . . .

This was fun you could use a mixture of logic and knowledge :)
